Gary Nichols - Field Of Plenty

On The Levee Broke, Gary Nichols is able to blend together an impassioned set of vocals with tremendously proficient guitar arrangements. The harmonies that are created during this introductory track will have fans on the edges of their seats. To Get Out of Pickin’ Cotton elicits a sunny Southern day; there is a laid back sound that feels like the rock of the 1970s while there is a considerable nod to the blues of the earlier years of the twentieth century. I Ain’t Commin Back is a high-water mark in terms of the gravitas brought by Gary. Each word, each utterance will resound with listeners long after the track ceases to play. Hints of violin and multi-part harmonies place this single into the traditional country and western genre.

America, American Dream will draw listeners in with the deliberate guitar and piano arrangements. This track utilizes a male and female set of vocals to make each lyric resound loudly with listeners; the subject material showcases the sheer opportunity that is present in our great country. A rising and falling action is used to great effect here, with the end result being that fans will be swinging back and forth by the song’s final notes. Poor Man’s Land destroys any conception that musicians put their weaker tracks toward the end of the album; this is just another of the stronger mid to late efforts that one will find if they listen to Field of Plenty,l a list that includes Sing to Me the Old Songs, Whisperin’ in the Wind and Down by the Riverside.

Sing to Me the Old Songs is a track that begins to build up; the nice and gradual increase in the tempo, coupled with a stylistic ode to acts like Alabama, makes this a must-listen. Whisperin’ in the Wind has a current and contemporary sound that will ensure Nichols garners some modern country play, while Down by the Riverside is a traditional sound that builds up a massive effort through the presence of gospel and folk styles. Gary Nichols’ Field of Plenty is a release that has a tremendous amount of replay value; make sure to purchase it from Merrimack Records.
