The Victory Drive - Before I Self Destruct

Belmar, New Jersey’s The Victory Drive begins their Before I Self Destruct EP with a cover of the 2009 Lady Gaga track Bad Romance. The Victory Drive’s version of this single moves through a number of different styles, including EDM, goth, and emo music. By the time that this cover concludes, listeners will be on the edges of their seats.

The Countdown Pt. II is our favorite track on Before I Self Destruct . There is such a heartfelt sound to Jamie’s vocals. The light instrumentation that is presented here is perfect, as it provides just enough in the way of energy to make the track truly sparkle. Hints of Owl City, The Rocket Summer, and Taking Back Sunday can be heard here. The Countdown Pt. II ratchets up to a high tempo at a hair after the two-minute mark, making the second half of the single the high-water mark for the track.

Dynamite ends the Before I Self Destruct double EP in a touching and emotionally intense way. Jamie’s vocals pull double duty here, as they establish a narrative for the song as well as adding to the melodies created by the bass and drums. The finesse of the aforementioned drums adds considerable complexity to this closing statement. When both the music and the vox are giving it their all, The Victory Drive shines the brightest. This is some beautiful stuff, and is a perfect way to conclude one of the most deep and detailed three-song releases we’ve ever heard. If you’re in the New Jersey area July 21st, check out The Victory Drive live at the The Stanhope House (45 Main St, Stanhope, NJ 07874).
