Strange Land Brewery (Austin, TX) was nice enough to send over a sample bottle of The Headless Gentleman, a bourbon barrel aged-pumpkin porter. The beer pours with a dark brown, almost blackish coloration and virtually nothing in the way of a head of which to speak. There is a hint of sharp, oaked bourbon to the nose of this beer after it is poured, but the initial nose is a bit understated. It is when one is able to take their first sip of Headless Gentleman where they will be able to glean a bit of the depth that is present here. Of course, there are notes of the vanilla and astringent burn of a bourbon that is present but what we’re the biggest fans of here has to be the moderating effect that the time spent in barrels has had. There is a tendency for a number of porters to come forth on the sweet side, while the mere presence of pumpkin does a lot to add to the overall sugar content of the brewery. It is this nexus of pumpkin and bourbon that makes this into an eminently drinkable beer, one that is able to have a rich and fulfilling set of flavors even when one gets close to the end of a bottle.

There are herbal hints, notes of anise, and even a bit of chicory and coffee that can be discerned in each bottle of The Headless Gentleman. The Headless Gentleman is a fantastic beer that will keep one warm during even the coolest nights.
