Everyone is going for the flashiest and most popular careers these days – engineering, medicine, and law seem to dominate the choices of most high school graduates. And yet, there is a lot to explore on the job market beyond those fields and there are some huge opportunities in specific areas that go largely unrealized due to the small amount of attention on them. And those that manage to get their foot in the door in those industries early on stand to benefit quite a lot in the long run.

Skilled Trades

Welders, plumbers, and many others in most parts of the world have one thing in common – they get paid surprisingly well for relatively little work and have a great degree of freedom in their schedules. At the same time, the market for those jobs is getting less and less saturated, as most fresh graduates immediately aim for science and law degrees, or other jobs that will have them working a desk job. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that getting your hands dirty is a “lesser” job than a white-collar position, and don’t ignore the huge opportunity to earn yourself and your family a nice living.

Dental Assistants

Many people pay close attention to the careers of dentists and it’s a frequently considered career path, but the world of dentistry hides a lot more in terms of job prospects, and some of those positions can be a much better fit for certain types of people. Just take a look at the best dental assistant schools in your area and you’ll find a degree that’s no less comprehensive than what a “real” dentist has to go through. However, you’ll also get the added bonus of having an easier time finding work (in the general case, at least), and having a lot less stress to deal with on a daily basis.

Music

No, we’re not talking about trying to be the next rock or rap star – while that’s clearly a lucrative career, it’s also mostly based on sheer luck. But a career in classical orchestral music can be surprisingly rewarding, both in terms of job prospects as well as compensation. It’s also not a very popular choice among young people looking to build a solid future, as it’s generally perceived to be a job with stability and security issues. That’s quite far from the case though, especially in some parts of the world, and if you’re the kind of person with a natural talent for reading and playing notes, you might find yourself moving towards a stable position in your life quite fast.

Don’t disregard certain career choices just because they’re not the top picks for the majority of students out there. Going with the flow and studying the same degrees as everyone else is actually how most people find themselves in a ruthless, overly competitive market with few real prospects for career advancement. Meanwhile, that plumber that just came around to fix your clogged toilet is probably making more than some of the high-paying engineers you stay in touch with, and he’s staying quiet and modest about it.
