We were able to stop in Jonesboro, Arkansas for a precious few days earlier in 2018 and had the opportunity to stop at a restaurant, N’Awlins Arkansas, that is crafting some food that is simultaneously reverent of the time-tested Cajun and Creole approach while ultimately being expression of John and Glin Miller’s own unique cooking style.

The decor of N’Awlins Arkansas is inviting and screams comfortable; everything in the restaurant has a home-made flair that endears the location with anyone stopping in. The Boudin Balls ($6.95) were brought over piping-hot. The grind of the sausage was rich and juicy, with N’Awlins Arkansas’ own remoulade adding considerable depth to the battered and fried appetizer. Where restaurants oftentimes relegate the younger set to sub-par servings (in terms of amount and quality), N’Awlins Arkansas offer a gluten-free (Popcorn Shrimp/Crawfish) options, along with Chicken Strips that are thick and are prepared to be as fresh as the rest of the entrees. It’s a small thing, but it’s the type of thing you see commonly when you bring a child into restaurants.

Keeping with the Queen City-style fare, N’Awlins Arkansas offers a wide array of po boys.Large portion sizes and numerous options – fried oysters, fried/grilled shrimp, catfish, chicken – make the selection all the more difficult. The restaurant offers a “Debris” Po’ Boy ($9.95), which heaps on slowly roasted beef, smothered with gravy and a variety of fixins and mayo.

The combination plate coupled the restaurant’s red beans and rice along with their chicken and sausage gumbo and jambalaya. The richness of each bite ensured that we were incredibly full by the time we had finished about half of each ramekin.
N’Awlins Arkansas is able to bring oysters up from the gulf and provide them on the half-shell as well as in fried and charbroiled formats. The Oysters Bienville, Morgan City (baked, with a trinity/bacon topping) and Rockefeller can be ordered separately or together as a combined half-dozen for $10.95.

We were only able to sample a small portion of the different plates available at the restaurant. It would be easy for a couple to visit the restaurant every Saturday for three months and continue to find new and exciting expressions from John. For example, the restaurant also offers burgers, steaks, catfish, muffalettas, and a wide variety of desserts (bread puddings, a bananas foster dish, and beignets).
If you find yourself at Arkansas State for business or pleasure, N’Awlins Arkansas is a must-visit. Out of the variety of options we visited while in city, we felt that the best foods, cheapest prices, and most engaging staff were at 303 Main Street. The restaurant’s bar is well-stocked and offers a variety of spirits, domestic and craft-beer, along with a full layout of cocktails.

The restaurant is opened from 11 to 2 and 5 to 9 Tuesdays through Thursdays, 11 to 2 and 5 to 10 on Friday. Visitors can pick up a meal from N’Awlins Arkansas all day (12 PM until 10 PM) on Saturdays. A variety of $7.95 specials are offered throughout the week.
