In today’s increasingly fast-paced and stressful world, it can be difficult to take time to slow down and reconnect with your emotions, especially if you are feeling overwhelmed or struggling to cope with even basic tasks. Work commitments, a family, and even travel, can all make you feel exhausted, not to mention balancing your social life, meaning that it can be difficult to schedule in some much-needed downtime. However, if you are looking to increase the amount of time that you spend on chilling out and slowing down, then you can make a huge improvement to your mental health and overall wellbeing if you try using these simple tips.

 

First, if you are feeling very overwhelmed and overworked, it is a good idea to write down a list of every issue that is causing you to lose sleep, get upset and feel anxious. Once you have done this, try and prioritize these issues. Make sure that you are realistic; remember that some issues will be able to be resolved quickly, while it may take longer for you to deal with more complex emotions or fears. Depending on how severe your concerns, it may be a good idea for you to consult a medical professional if you are truly struggling to cope. No issue or concern is too small either, so make sure that you do not let any niggling issues slip through the net. If you are not getting enough sleep, then you could be feeling irritable and short-tempered, made even worse if you try and refuel your body with endless cups of coffee or sodas. If you find it hard to get to sleep and slow down during the evenings, then make sure that you rethink your bedtime routine. Try having a warming drink before bed, and instead of watching a television series or a movie, you could curl up with a good book. Remove all technology and distractions from the bedroom, as this will affect your sleep cycle. Make sure that you do not eat dinner too late either, or else you could be waking up in a few hours to use the bathroom! If you struggle to drift off, then try using guided meditation to help you to relax, or even try a few yoga stretches to help ease out your muscles and relax your body even more.

 

Other relaxation methods

If you are still struggling to relax, then there are other methods that you can explore. Some individuals use essential oils to help them to unwind and reset their minds. Chamomile and lavender are great for helping to reduce your stress levels. You may also want to try using Mindfulness, a technique that encourages you to focus on the here and now, and leaves your negative thoughts and emotions to one side. When you begin to use Mindfulness, you should notice a change in your energy levels, and if things do not go to plan, then chances are you will no longer feel so stressed or upset.
