NeuFutur Magazine Introduces Phillipe

Metaphysical Mother is the follow up to the album Spiritual Orgasm. A special tribute to Black women & Mothers, dedicated to my Mother and the whole feminine principle of the universe. The Poetic flow is one of a kind and Phillipe really puts it down. A special treat for the ladies. Hip-poetry & Flow-etry with a twist of Soul is what Phillipe describes his style of poetry or spoken word. One of the Kings of poetry in the Atlanta poet circut, Phillipe represents well and holds it down. Continue reading “NeuFutur Magazine Introduces Phillipe”

Brooklyn-based five-piece Extra Life has announced the release of their second album, Made Flesh, on LOAF Recordings in March 2010. Extra Life is the primary musical vehicle for Charlie Looker, singer, guitarist and composer, who has become one of the most intense and respected voices in the New York experimental underground. Looker was a core member of legendary brutal chamber ensemble Zs and has also worked with diverse artists such as Dirty Projectors, Glenn Branca, William Parker and the S.E.M. Ensemble.

Formed in 2007, Extra Life combines elements of Medieval chant, metallic hardcore, dark neofolk, abstract modernism and lush pop. The music is cosmic in scope, a sacred alchemical marriage of the earth’s crude, blackened weight and the ethereal light of the divine. Extra Life’s debut CD, Secular Works, was released in the US in 2008 on Planaria Recordings and in Europe in 2009 on LOAF Recordings to wide critical acclaim. Their month-long tour of the U.S. included bills alongside Carla Bozulich, Abe Vigoda, the Dead Science, Excepter, Thrones and Rain Machine. Extra Life also did a European tour, playing festivals including Primavera Sound (Barcelona), Villette Sonique (France), Kilbi (Switzerland) and Moers (Germany) and sharing bills with Sonic Youth, Sunn 0))), My Bloody Valentine and Deerhunter.

Both more accessible and more severe than their previous work, Made Flesh extends from fragile acoustic ballads to industrial symphonic assaults and deepens the band’s signature heaviness while also exploring more psychedelic studio treatments, electronic textures and synths.

The band is currently offering a free mp3 download of their song, “Black Hoodie,” taken from a limited edition split 12″ with Nat Baldwin, which will be re-recorded/re-imagined for Made Flesh.

Extra Life Selected Press:

“Every so often there’s a record so accomplished that it makes most albums of its type sound ridiculous, and Secular Works is one of those … Remarkable for its scope, depth and technical accomplishment, Secular Works is a devastating record that has the power to change minds, if only people hear it. Don’t miss out.” – Dusted Magazine

“In Extra Life, Looker taps into a mesmerizing form of avant-rock raga, repeating words, and shifting into a windswept, entrancing post-punk throat singing … these are master works.” – Stereogum

” … scarily focused and ruthlessly complex in a post-prog sort of way, but it also flirts with a dark, sumptuous art-pop vibe. The end product is relentless, enveloping and frequently gorgeous.” – Time Out New York

“…Looker’s sense of arrangement and composition melds each sound into a gripping work where fear and urgency loom within each track … It creates an aesthetic so grave and completely realized that it’s with the best sense of anxiety that I anticipate where Extra Life goes next.” – Tiny Mix Tapes

Vivian Girls announce Winter tour dates

Released almost exactly a year after In The Red’s reissue of their self-titled debut, the new album, Everything Goes Wrong promises to be slightly longer than the 22 mins their debut clocked in at with the band having taken their time and recorded it in six days – rather than the three their debut took though many of the songs were still recorded in single takes.

Whilst the band have again captured their raw, fun edge – as the influence of ’60s girl groups, The Ramones as well as surf and indie pop, still ring true, Everything Goes Wrong is without a doubt a darker, moodier album than its predecessor; a trait which arguably makes the band an even more appealing proposition this time round.

Over the last year, the Vivian Girls have toured the US and Europe extensively, received a considerable amount of national and international press, and, perhaps most significant of all, become the subject of a question on Jeopardy.

Brooklyn group Clare and the Reasons is pleased to announce a west coast tour with Van Dyke Parks in February 2010. Parks collaborated with the group on their celebrated debut release, The Movie, and Clare and the gang are eager to join up with him once again behind the release of their new album, Arrow, out now on Frog Stand Records. As the band prepares for tour, they are releasing a cover of Genesis’ song “That’s All” (now with more tuba!) for free mp3 download.

Clare and the Reasons is fronted by collaborators Clare and Olivier Manchon. Their sophomore album, Arrow, features a guest appearance from Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond and live, they have a steady list of contributors (including members of The National and Beirut). The band recently returned from a North American tour with The Vic Chesnutt Band.

The band talks about their upcoming dates with Van Dyke Parks here:

Some things come along, like a sunny day after weeks of rain, or a good baguette, or a comfortable, yet good looking pair of shoes… That stuff is exciting, brings joy. When you find out you’re touring with Van Dyke Parks, well, that’s something entirely different.

The legendary musical genius will be playing some rare (as rare as a good baguette in a small US city) concerts of his very own songs – not anyone else’s – his masterpieces. I’m assuming you will want to come to these shows,I know we would – wait, we are! Some Reasons will be joining Van Dyke on stage.

If the world is still a good and decent place, these tickets will go fast. Don’t wait until the last minute, procrastinators will be missing out on goodness. Guest appearance by songwriting wunderkind Josh Mease.

We’re so honored to be sharing this tour and making evenings filled with music with THE REAL VAN DYKE PARKS.

Clare and the Reasons Upcoming Dates:

2/9 Seattle, WA – The Triple Door w/ Van Dyke Parks
2/10 Portland, OR – Mississippi Studios w/ Van Dyke Parks
2/12 San Francisco, CA – The Swedish American Hall w/ Van Dyke Parks
2/14 (make out show!) Los Angeles, CA – McCabe’s w/ Van Dyke Parks

“…sweetly intricate chamber-pop that somehow mingled folk-pop, Philip Glass, cabaret oompah and the Beach Boys – for starters – behind the songwriter Clare Muldaur Manchon’s poised high voice, with an endearing quaver.” – New York Times

“‘Arrow’ comes equipped with an estimable measure of charming refrains that linger with you long after the album.” – Pitchfork

“Manchon’s words strike a graceful balance between wit and sweetness, offering the kindest of compliments.” – NPR

“Brooklyn’s helium-voiced Clare Muldaur Manchon coos ever-so-sweetly about the bummer part of love…Think Regina Spektor x Nina Persson and you’ve got the gist” – NYLON Magazine

“…a wonderful piece of chamber pop.” –
