Introducing Boy Eats Drum Machine

Boy Eats Drum Machine is the solo work of native Portlander, Jon Ragel. He is a songwriter, producer, singer, turntablist, and also plays saxophone, guitar, synthesizer, organ, and several percussive nick nacks. As a one-man musical act, Boy Eats Drum Machine merges the worlds of turntablism and live rock performance as Ragel spins breaks and surgically inserts sounds while juggling vocals, percussion, and saxophone.

Kassin +2 tour US for the first time since 2005

“Brazilian trio mash ’60s flower power with traditional tropicialia and samba, upping the chill factor ten fold.” Continuing the trilogy of The Plus 2’s, Moreno/Domenico/Kassin+2, Futurismo nimbly threads the lyricism and playfulness of its predecessors Music Typewriter (2001) and Sincerely Hot (2004). The +2’s arrive on the scene again, this time alongside other bands from Brazil, like Bonde de Role and CSS, all of whom demonstrate that music from other…

Asobi Seksu To Release “Hush” On Polyvinyl Records Feb. 17th 2009

While Asobi Seksu’s creative core explored music at an early age (lead vocalist/keyboardist Yuki Chikudate got standing ovations at child prodigy recitals when she was just 8; guitarist/vocalist James Hanna bounced between sludgy hardcore and Mogwai-schooled post-rock in his teens), their potential ‘career’ wasn’t put into perspective until a stint at the Manhattan School of Music. And by put into perspective, we mean finding out what they didn’t want to…

Pre-Delegitimization

I believe all people are generally good, and almost all the people in my small village have the best of intentions, and would love to live in a world of perfect peace and harmony. These people work hard every day and many have a lot more experience in the real world than I do. The people of Brewster, Ohio, for the most part do a great job of raising their…

None But Ourselves

Has a song ever made you cry? I feel this is a question of utmost importance in determining whether or not one experiences empathy. The overwhelming rush of adrenaline up your spine and wave of electricity flying up your arm to your fingertips with the only source being such a powerful song that embodies commanding soul forcing you to feel the artist’s genuine attempt to connect with another soul.

X-Rated Fusion Liqueur (34 Proof)

I know that Hpnotiq is a major type of drink with the college set, but X-Rated Fusion is in many aspects a step above Hpnotiq. This is due to the composition of the liqueur, which ties together vodka, blood oranges, mango, and passion fruits into a cohesive and robust liqueur. The alcohol content (34 proof) means that this liqueur is equally good in and of itself, and as a mixer…

The Beach Boys cross paths with The Flaming Lips on Brass Bed’s “Midnight Matinee.”

Driven by a wide spectrum of influences, the music of Brass Bed moves easily through an eclectic mix of genres. From alt-country ballads and progressive rock hooks, to sticky-sweet, heart-felt lyrics, and dissonant experimental freak-outs, their unique mix of intelligently designed compositions has left some critics describing them as something akin to “The Beach Boys crossing paths with The Flaming Lips.”

Joey Cape – Bridge (CD)

Joey Cape is certainly not suffering for lack of musical outlets. As the front man for Lagwagon, he also bounces between Bad Astronaut, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Afterburner and The Playing Favorites. You can now add solo artist to his every-expanding resume. Though he had a split record with No Use For a Name singer Tony Sly a few years ago, “Bridge” is Cape’s first full length solo…

RCRD LBL: “Get ready to play ‘The Book of Matches’ on repeat for the rest of the day. Or rather, resist that cause if you think this song is as totally bad ass as it can get, wait til they add bloody horns on ‘We Used To Dream About Bridges.’ …if [Alphabet Graveyard] isn’t the most jubilant record to tickle your ears all summer, I’m a goddamned monkey’s uncle.”
