Psalm is the first track on Cousin Mouth’s new release, MayflowerPeacemakerHolyredeemer. The track is able to build upon traditional gospel and R&B music while placing a bit of distorted guitar and hum. What results is something that is distinctly different than the styles and genres upon which it has been build, a trend that will continue to be shown during the bulk of this album.

Undiagnosed is a deep effort in that it links together the 1970s Detroit rock approach with soul, funky, and even a bit of psych to make for a close and cozy track. The passion and skill of Cousin Mouth is showcased here. The depth of Undiagnosed ensures that listeners will have to go back multiple times before hearing each note and arrangement that CM has placed into this composition.

New Memories keeps the energy of MayflowerPeacemakerHolyredeemer high through the presence of a secondary set of vocals and an angular, deliberate bass line. While the song is able to contribute to the overall spirit of the album, I feel that it is a high-water mark for the release as it discovers new avenues for Cousin Mouth.

Every Bad Man is one of the major breakthroughs on the album as it is the most upfront and distinct in terms of Cousin Mouth’s narrative quality. While there are hints of 1970s folks and prog-rock to whet instrumental aficionados’ beaks here, this track is the most personal and effecting on MayflowerPeacemakerHolyredeemer. Lucifer in the Flesh is another bonafide hit for Cousin Mouth with a layered approach and outright play for the minds and hearts of listeners; softly-sung backing vocals, introspective guitars, and a sincere set of pipes showcase the titular phrase perfectly. MayflowerPeacemakerHolyredeemer is a meaty album, one that listeners will need to play with headphones on to fully experience.
