Catman Cohen – How I Want To Dream (CD)

NeuFutur has been lucky enough to review a number of titles of Cohen’s discography, and we were presented with a copy of eir latest, “How I Want To Dream”. The disc starts out with the titular track, which melds absolutely sick guitar lines with a slower set of vocals. The track, despite only taking up about three minutes of the total time on the disc, sets the stage well for…

Steve Lieberman – Diaspora (CD)

This album is based around a theme, being “A Folk-Punk History of the Hebrew Nation”. The tracks on this CD go throughout the entirety of Jewish history, bouncing through the distinct segment of the group’s history. The disc starts out with “Exiled To The Diaspora”, a driven type of track that will have the drums firmly implanted in listeners’ ears by the end of the track. “Diaspora” moves on to…

Great White – Rising (CD)

It would be easy to write off Great White as just another way past its prime hair metal band trying desperately to relive the 80’s. But Great White, like Tesla and a handful of others who got caught up in the atrocious metal scene 20 years ago, had actual talent and some great songs to back up their bluster.

Wedlock – Black Sundress (Single)

“Black Sundress” is the latest single by Wedlock, and long-time readers of NeuFutur will remember our review of Wedlock’s last single “Reverend Charisma” – https://neufutur.com/?p=6628 . This track showcases significant evolution by Wedlock, giving listeners a different facet of the band.

Buckfast Superbee – Turn of the Radio Age (CD)

“Turn Of The Radio Age” is a somber, slow song that gives listeners a small sample of the allure of Buckfast Superbee. Individuals feel as if they are at the edge of a mountain; they make a plunge that sets them up perfectly for the tempest that is “The Heavy Persuader”. “The Heavy Persuader” is an stellar track that operates that the intersection of punk, melodic rock, and emo music;…

Z Rock – Season One (DVD)

The premise is funny enough that it’s amazing someone hasn’t thought about committing it to film before. A struggling metal band at night plays kid’s parties during the day to pay the bills. The best part about it is that it’s based on a real band. IFC picked up this original and surprisingly addictive half-hour TV series.

Dipsomaniacs – Social Crutch (CD)

Likely the bastard child of The Replacements and Cheap Trick, New Jersey’s Dipsomaniacs play boozy bar rock and power pop stripped of any pretention. On Social Crutch, their sixth full length, there are few surprises, but that’s not exactly a bad thing. Sure the sound is a little closer to power pop than the garage rock most associate with the band, but the group’s central themes of booze, partying and…

Galaxy Quest: Deluxe (DVD)

Did you know that Galaxy Quest was the first movie in which Justin Long played a major role? This means, as is the case with the movie itself, Long’s career has reached out over the space of a decade. The movie itself provides ample comparison to Star Trek; the path that each of the actors took after Galaxy Quest ended in the film is eerily similar to that experienced by…

A Plumm Summer (DVD)

A Plumm Summer has been out in some form since 2007, but it is only just now that it is seeing its DVD release. The film itself surrounds the theft of a frog puppet, and showcases the acumen of a set of children, at some points exceeding that of the FBI in regards to solving the case. The film itself is based off a real-life event that hit the town…

The Munchables (Nintendo Wii)

The Munchables blend equal parts Pac-Man and Katamari Damacy. The graphics fit extremely well for the title, despite not being of the hyper realism school that is all the rage in current games. All players have to do here is to om nom nom nom on their enemies – by eating baddies, the characters will grow larger and be able to take on more in the way of obstacles. The…

Aqua Vit (70 Proof)

Aqua Vit is one of the first spirits that we here at NeuFutur have had that are full-powered (or are relatively full powered) that do not easily fall into a whiskey, gin, vodka, rum type of connotation. The spirit itself is created by the owners of the titular restaurant, which has locations in the United States, Sweden, and Japan. The “type” of Aqua Vit varies dependent on where exactly one…

The Limited and Very Rare Noah Van Sciver Mini Comic

In the last year or so, I have felt that I have become increasingly isolated from the hip and happening land of independent magazines and comics. It sucks, to say the least. However, Noah Van Sciver has been gracious enough to begin and continue to foster a working relationship with NeuFutur in the last year or so.

True Blood – The Complete First Season (DVD)

Stephenie Meyer’s fawned-over vampire soap opera Twilight may have been stealing all the press this Spring, but HBO’s True Blood is hands down the far more interesting vampire saga. The first season, told over 12 episodes, comes off like a cross between Twin Peaks and Six Feet Under (whose creator, Alan Ball, also happens to be the man behind True Blood).

Fanboys (DVD)

Fanboys is just as much an homage to writer/director Kevin Smith as it is to Star Wars, the Holy Grail the characters are chasing throughout the movie. Set in 1998, the movie centers on a group of post-high school friends, still obsessed with Star Wars and working in a comic book store (kind of like every other character in a Smith movie). A friend is dying of cancer and likely…

Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl! (DVD Set)

Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl! was created by Noaki Urasawa, who was attached to Monster and Master Keaton. The show starts off with a young female named Yawara, who has been forced into learning judo through the exhortations of a grandfather that sees Yawara’s tremendous talent. Other characters, such as Yawara’s rival Sayaka and Yawara’s coach Shinnosuke, further pad out the cast. Beyond the humor that I present in the…

Malibu Melon Rum (Rum)

Melon is, I suppose, the hottest flavor this summer. We just reviewed the Smirnoff Melon Vodka a few days back, and we just received the Malibu Melon rum. Melon is a good flavor to lead off the summer, because it imparts a lighter flavor to any drink that the individual may make. The spirit may be a little on the light side in terms of alcohol content, but the taste…

Dexter: Season 2 (Blu-Ray)

Unless I am forgetting something, I believe that this is the first time that we here at NeuFutur have had the ability to go and feature a Blu-Ray edition of a show’s complete season. Where a number of the different series’ seasons have crept into the 5 and 6 DVD releases, the increased storage size of the Blu-Ray ensure that what viewers are left with is something much less unwieldy.…

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Blu-Ray)

Rounding out our Blu-Ray coverage for tonight would have to be a review of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The film itself is adapted from a 1921 F. Scott Fitzgerald work, in which a baby boy is born with all of the hang-ups and problems presented typically to older individuals. As the years go on, the older looking Benjamin seems to grow physically younger. With all of the events…

Operation Valkyrie: The Stauffenberg Plot to Kill Hitler (DVD)

Operation Valkyrie: The Stauffenberg Plot to Kill Hitler is a historical piece that looks to showcase information about the real life plot that was the influence for the 2008 hit Valkyrie. At over three hours (including bonus materials), it looks to go into the finest detail regarding every single aspect of the plot, plus a number of ancillary matters that were important for setting the stage for the plot (as…

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2 (PS2)

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2, as people may expect, is a sequel to the similarly-named 2006 title, which itself had a rich heritage. The game itself is set in an alternate timeline in 1930s Japan, where the Taisho period (which ended in 1926) had maintained stability into the 1930s. Players assume the role of Raidou, whom along with eir cat Gouto pull double-duty as detectives and devil banishers. The…
