Aeroplane, 1929 – The Holy Ghost

Aeroplane, 1929 – The Holy Ghost / 2007 Topshelf / 6 Tracks / / /

I swear, I’ve tried to review this album about 8 times, and each time I sit down to do it, life gets in the way. No more; “The Holy Ghost” starts off with “Locomotives”, and it shows Aeroplane, 1929 as an act that starts off meekly and quietly. The walking guitar line that is present throughout the entirety of the track gives the song a timeless folk flavor that is familiar with a wide swath of the music-listening public. The track does not give individuals much of an idea about Aeroplane, 1929; it is a middling track that individuals will find few problems with. The same style of guitar is present during the title track, but there are a few more instruments that present themselves during this track. The resulting song has a little more energy and begins to tip the scales in the favor of Aeroplane, 1929. Continue reading “Aeroplane, 1929 – The Holy Ghost”

Billy Bragg Wins Q-Award, Meets QEII

Esteemed Populist’s Latest Collaboration is with None Other Than Ludwig van Beethoven, New Record on Anti- Coming Spring 2008

The legendary Billy Bragg, de facto conscience of popular music in Britain and beyond, has been having one hell of a month. On October 8th he was presented with the 2007 Classic Songwriter award at Britain’s biggest and most respected music event, the Q Awards. Previous winners have included Elton John and Oasis’ Noel Gallagher. As KT Tunstall introduced him, she said, “I wish he was my history teacher, I wish he was my big brother, I wish I could vote for him,” and as Bragg made his way to the podium, Sir Paul McCartney took him by the hand and offered congratulations as the room rose in a standing ovation. In classic Bragg style, he used his short time at the microphone to bring attention to his latest endowment, Jail Guitar Doors ( ), which provides musical equipment for those incarcerated in the U.K. Continue reading “Billy Bragg Wins Q-Award, Meets QEII”

Mortiis – FØdt til Ã… herske [ADB]

This album was made by a band members of emperor, one of the most internationally famous black metal bands. Their albums can be found on Century Black, which is a imprint of Century Media records. FØdt til Ã… herske is on Dark Dungeon Music, and it consists of two songs. The original pressing of the album was on Malicious Records. The whole album is a great work of slow instrumental music. This is not grating at all, just an atmospheric compilation, and it is so amazing. Very good music to zone out to. When i listened to this records i actually envisioned medieval times. I got this album for free from Magnolia Thunderpussy in Columbus, and i still don’t know why. You can reach Dark Dungeon Music at Dark Dungeon Music, Box 166155, Chicago, IL 60616. Or at

Lower East Side Stitches / Murphy’s Law Split 7 inch [ADB]

Lower East Side Stitches / Murphy’s Law Split 7 inch (3000 Print) Red Vinyl (NG Records)

This vinyl was made because of Der Fuhrer’s Guiliani’s views on the police brutality that recently occurred in NYC. The LES Stiches song on this album is “NYC is dead”, and the Murphy’s law song on this was “Quality of Life”. “NYC is Dead” is on the Stitches newest album, Staja98LES ,which a review of is on my page. “NYC” is an awesome anthem, with all around great vocals, guitars, lyrics, and everything else. These guys Definitely have the classic New York Blood flowing through their Veins, and this effort is perfect.

LES Stitches-Rating: 8.5/10

Murphy’s Law- The song, “Quality of Life” starts off with some excellent sound clips, and ML has a sort of old Offspringish sounding funk. This song is a magnum opus, a cornerstone of what political punk should be. Ml is Definitely influenced by Surf Punk, as evidenced by the solos on this track.

Murphy’s Law-Rating: 8/10

David Byrne – The Knee Plays

David Byrne – The Knee Plays / 2007 Nonesuch / 20 Tracks / / /

Individuals that are big fans of David Byrne will know that “The Knee Plays” is not a new album, but its release by Nonesuch is the first time it has made it onto CD. This package contains the music from the CD, along with a DVD that has over 400 different photographs taken during the original stages of The Knee Plays. Why exactly this CD was not released in 1985 is beyond me; the format was already in common use by this period, but individuals that are fans of Byrne or the Talking Heads can feel vindicated in the fact that there is a legit CD version of this release finally. “Tree (Today is an Important Occasion)” is the first track on the score, and it provides an interesting approach to musical arrangements that is simultaneously catchy and yet is something that pulls at the fabric of what is proper in music. Athlete – Beyond The Neighbourhood

Athlete – Beyond The Neighbourhood / 2007 Astralwerks / 11 Tracks / /

Athlete is perhaps the biggest band that no one has heard of in the United States. Their last album, “Tourist”, went double platinum, and “Beyond The Neighbourhood” is poised to do the same thing. From the opening strains of “In Between 2 State”, Athlete shows that they understand how to get individuals involved with their music. Continue reading “Athlete – Beyond The Neighbourhood”
