Old Crow Medicine Show Add Further Details To Broadcast of Sold-Out New Year’s Eve Show At The Ryman

Old Crow Medicine Show (OCMS) reveal more details for the broadcast of their sold-out show on December 31, 2012 at the Ryman Auditorium. The show will broadcasted live by Sirius XM Outlaw Country (Channel 60) as well as WSM 650 AM Radio, home of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry.

Outlaw DJ Elizabeth Cook will be hosting the Sirius XM broadcast. Outlaw Country, created and executive produced by E Street Band member “Little Steven” Van Zandt, is home to the freaks, misfits, outcasts, rebels and renegades of country music.

Listeners who can’t tune in to the band’s performance via Sirius XM can hear the performance broadcast live on WSM 650 AM radio or streamed at wsmonline.com. WSM 650 AM is the most famed country music station in the world. Each day, the station shares country, bluegrass, and Americana as well as the excitement of Music City with listeners around the world.

WSM 650 AM will go live with opener Pokey LaFarge’s set at 10:00 PM ET/9:00 PM CT and Old Crow’s set at 11:30 PM ET/10:30 PM CT.  Sirius XM will only broadcast Old Crow’s set at 11:30 PM ET/10:30 CT.

OCMS have spent the latter half of 2012 touring in support of their fourth full-length studio album, Carry Me Back, which was released on July 17. The album achieved the highest chart position in the band’s career. The album has been the #1 Bluegrass Album in Billboard Magazine for 20 weeks.

Old Crow recently received a Grammy nomination in the Long Form Video category for the film Big Easy Express — a documentary about last year’s Railroad Revival Tour with OCMS, Mumford & Sons, and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

OCMS (Ketch Secor, Critter Fuqua, Kevin Hayes, Morgan Jahnig, Gill Landry, and Chance McCoy) spend most of their time on the road, and have made a name for themselves as energetic performers with an unbridled spirit.

Patrik-Ian Polk’s The Skinny

Breaking Glass Pictures/QC Cinema and Tall Skinny Black Boy Productions have closed the deal to release The Skinny, the latest film from Patrik-Ian Polk, director of Sundance favorite Punks and creator of Logo’s popular series “Noah’s Arc” and the award-winning film Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom.  The film will be available on DVD December 18th (SRP $24.99).

The Skinny is a sharply scripted comedy about a group of four young black gay men and their lesbian best friend.  They arrange to meet up in New York City one year after their graduation from Brown University. Their plans for a weekend of fun start off well, relaxed in each other’s company as only old friends can be. But old tensions quickly resurface.  Drinking, drugs, hidden desire and the demands of promiscuity put friendship, trust and even lives at risk.

The film had its world premiere at the Outfest Fusion Film Festival in March, where Polk received the 2012 Fusion Achievement Award from filmmaker Lee Daniels, before embarking on a successful theatrical release across the United States.  Polk is currently in pre-production on his next film, a coming-of-age drama set in Mississippi based on the novel “Blackbird” by Larry Duplechan.

“Breaking Glass Pictures is a wonderful company,” Polk said. “I’ve known them for years and am thrilled to finally get the opportunity to work together. The Skinny is the first movie I’ve done completely as an independent producer, without the benefit of a big-name production company or network behind me – so I’m thrilled to be working with Breaking Glass to bring this project to a larger audience.”

Breaking Glass Co-President Richard Ross went on to say, “We think of Patrik as both a friend and an amazingly talented writer-director. The Skinny is bursting with his special brand of wit and wisdom – it’s really a fantastic film.”

Jussie Smollett heads the cast in his first role since 1995.  The former child star (Mighty Ducks) was last onscreen in the television series “On Our Own” with his siblings, including sister Jurnee Smollett (“Friday Night Lights”).  His co-stars include Blake Young-Fountain, Anthony Burrell, Shanika Warren-Markland, and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman.   “Noah’s Arc” stars Darryl Stephens (Logo’s new series “DTLA”), Wilson Cruz (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and Jennia Fredrique appear in supporting roles.

The DVD will arrive complete a director’s commentary, deleted scenes, behind the scenes footage and much more.

The Brazil Showcase at SOBs – 1/12/2013

Dendê is a percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist. He’s been a professional musician since the age of 14, when he appeared in the frontline of Timbalada, Carlinhos Brown’s superstar percussion ensemble. Since 2001, he’s been splitting his time between New York and Bahia, and has played with Mongo Santamaria, Giovanni Hidalgo, Zakir Hussain, David Byrne, and Vinicius Cantuária. His own bands include the folkloric music and dance troupe Ologundê, the acoustic Samba de Três, and Arrastão do Dendê, a traditional Afro bloco (samba party band), but it’s as leader and principal songwriter of his flagship band that Dendê has made his greatest impact.

The band, formerly called Hãhãhães, has been packing clubs and festivals throughout the US and internationally for the past five years most. The have been presented most notably by Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the World Music Institute, the Cedar Cultural Center, the Old Town School for Folk Music, Joe’s Pub, World Café Live and Johnny D’s among many others. They have been featured at festivals such as the Marquette Waterfront Festival in Madison, WI; the Lake Eden Arts Festival in North Carolina; the Kalalu Festival in Saint Lucia.

Dendê & Band will be releasing their second album, Back to Bahia in March 2013. Combining Brazil’s rhythm heavy music with the grooves of afrobeat, reggae, merengue, and others from around the world Back to Bahia showcases the band’s sizzling showmanship and versatility.

The album includes special guests such as Ilê Aiyê, Melvin Gibbs, Graham Haynes, Vinicius Cantuaria, Magary Lord, Luizinho do Gege (Daniela Mercury) and Gerson Silva & Mikael Mutti (Carlinhos Brown) among many others. The band will be touring throughout 2013/2014 to promote the album.

SPARROWS Planning WATAIN Tribute Album

Dallas-based Deathened Black Metal act SPARROWS are currently planning a covers album paying tribute to Swedish Black Metal legends WATAIN. The band has issued an open invitation for acts interested in taking part in the project. Details are lined out in the following statement from SPARROWS:

“We are starting the project of recording a WATAIN Tribute Album. If you are a band, and want to do a cover on the album, we will pay for the time for you to record it, AND give you a copy to use for yourselves. Please share this. Any band that can come to the Dallas, Texas area to record is welcome. If you are from out of state and you can afford a trip to Dallas to record, the same applies to you. The song SPARROWS are putting on the album is ‘Reaping Death,’ so have that in mind.”

Interested parties should message the band at www.facebook.com/thisissparrows

SPARROWS recently released Mark of the Beast: Indoctrination digitally through bandcamp where it may be streamed in full and/or purchased for the measly sum of $6.66 at sparrowsmetal.bandcamp.com.

The EP is the first of a three-part series; the connection between the series will be divulged after all three have been released. At a fundamental level, the sound of SPARROWS is rooted in its collective influences, including WATAIN, BEHEMOTH, ENSLAVED, DEICIDE, and GOATWHORE, yet the Dallas Destroyers bring to the table an identity all their own. Recorded in the Sparrows Lair in Dallas’ Industrial District by drummer Bryan Nicholas (who also mixed and mastered it), Mark of the Beast: Indoctrination delivers the goods with unmitigated malevolence. The scary part is that it is only the first of three brazen black metal assaults.

A series of videos documenting the recording of the EP can be viewed at this location.

Genius Lychas Foldable Gaming Headset (HS-G550)

The build design of this headset ensures that players will be able to use and otherwise abuse it well beyond the limits of similar products on the market. The adjustable headband allows players of different ages (and head sizes) to keep the microphone close to the mouth. This microphone allows for static-free conversation on Ventrilo or Teamspeak, while the speakers in the headset ensures crystal-clear playback. I feel that the HS-G550s are great for audio playback, as the driver (50mm neodymium) does not create any discussion even on the bassiest tracks.

Another solid addition to the HS-G550 has to be the on-headset volume / mute button; the design of this switch is intuitive enough that one will be able to operate it in the dark. The cable length for the jack is 2.5 meters (8.2 feet), an absolute godsend for those that require additional slack. There simply is not a better headset for the price; while this is marketed for gamers, I feel that anyone that requires good recording and playback options would do fine to search out their own. The Genius Lychas Headset can be purchased at numerous online retailers for as little as $30 and will take a good 5 or 10 years of constant use. Check out the Genius website for more information regarding their lines and the slated releases for 2013.

Shiner Holiday Cheer Reviewed

holiday cheer/ Spoetzl Brewery / http://www.shiner.com/

The Shiner Holiday Cheer, a dunkelweizen (dark wheat ale) is a decidedly different effort than what comes around for the holiday season. This is because the beer is brewed with pecans and peaches, adding lightness to the beer that is refreshing instead of heavy. Shiner Holiday Cheer is a unique effort that pours nicely, giving imbibers a nice head and nose that blends together hints of the aforementioned peaches and a small tartness. The head rapidly dissipates, while the initial taste bursts forth with a light, fruity, floral profile. The beer is extremely easy drinking while providing a decent alcohol content (5.4%) and considerable variation from their timeless bock or from other offerings at a bar or restaurant. The aftertaste disappears rapidly, keeping in line with the beer’s airy and wide-open flavor.

Shiner Holiday Cheer is readily available through much of the United States, and the beer’s desire to march to the beat of a different drummer makes this a perfect addition for anyone that is any sort of beer fan. The nuanced flavor of Holiday Cheer ensures that imbibers will have a considerably different and always delightful time whenever they purchase a six pack. Look for the classically-designed holder and red/green color scheme of the Holiday Cheer; it is unmistakable even at a distance. Let us know what you think about the beer, and keep your eye out for Spoetzl’s 2013 efforts.
