Chuck Gnome; or how much will travelocity sue for? (iPhone Game)

Lately I have been testing out a new game that just hit the AppStore called, Chuck Gnome. It is a visual treat for sure, and the game play couldn’t be easier/crack candy coated, but it does leave me asking one question; Does Travelocity know about this? I know it’s unfair to lump all Gnomes into a group, I mean Travelocity wasn’t the first place to feature a Gnome wearing a…

Lorene Drive – Romantic Wealth (CD)

Why exactly Lorene Drive didn’t put “Let It Go” as the lead-off track for “Romantic Wealth” is beyond me. The first track, “God Knows I Love You Kid” is a track that is essentially a non-starter for the band, as it is even cut in a style that makes it feel as if it was culled from a different set of tracks than the rest of the disc. As it…

Lordroc – E2 To Bass (CD)

Pretty solid rap coming out of a more laid-back outlook, Lordroc’s first track on “E2 To Bass”, “Who Is It U Love?”. Everything comes together convincingly, whether it is the early-nineties backbeat or the female vocals that work as a bridge on the track. Using a host of different producers for every track, Lordroc runs the risk of making an album that shifts in overall sound every few minutes. Luckily,…

The Good Guy (DVD)

Very few in the way of romantic comedies can more largely be enjoyed by a movie-going audience. In fact, late-nineties/early aughts films in the vein, including Bridget Jones’ Diary or My Big Fat Greek Wedding seem incredibly dated. The Good Guy, a romantic comedy featuring Alexis Bledel as a person in charge of eir destiny, matched up with both mogul (Scott Porter) and timid one (Bryan Greenberg). The tension that…

Look What I Did – My First Time (CD)

Hey, its metal! Look What I Did are schizophrenic enough that every song has enough of a different sound to it that one thinks that different bands are playing the tracks on this disc. However, each track on this disc has a section where Look What I Did really makes a plea for radio-play. Whether it is the very generic sounding bridge or the Stabbing Westward-like vocals in “My Biggest…

Looks Like Rain – S/T EP +2 (CD)

One thing that immediately stands out about Looks Like Rain is vocalist Amy Court, who begins this EP with a very Susanne Vega meets Dolores O’Riordan set of vocals. The music may not be the most intricate of nests in which to lay the sweet vocals of Amy, but really functions well as a background. Imagine the light-rock stylings of Sixpence None the Richer and one will get the general…

With a critically acclaimed EP and a track licensed by media giant ESPN under his belt before the year hit its half-way mark, one might think Los Angeles emcee Trek Life might take a little downtime. Instead the stalwart rapper has chosen to increase the momentum. Recently announcing his upcoming LP Everything Changed Nothing, Trek Life is set to release a mixtape entitled Before Everything Changed prior to the album…

Look Mexico – The Crucial EP (CD)

The guitar-heavy opening to “He Bit Me” opens up into a fuller instrumental track which is comparable to the post-Fugazi pre-emo acts, bands like The Appleseed Cast and Desert City Soundtrack. The track is only ninety seconds long but the arrangements are complicated and fulfilling; individuals would be fools to not be fans of Look Mexico after this first track. This same type of rich instrumentation continues with “I Can’t…

NAKED HIGHWAY’s new video ready to make the Summer even Hotter

Not since Peaches has an artist turned electro sexuality on its head like NYC’s electro-glam outfit NAKED HIGHWAY and its new album MOST HOTTEST! (Disco Life! Records). Fueled with the enough pheronome-filled beats that would make Prince blush, the new single “IN & OUT” is a funk-filled, erotic romp, not coy about its lyrics or its intentions. “Musically, it was inspired by 80’s freestyle,” says Naked Highway mastermind Sy Boccari.…

Longwave – There’s A Fire (CD)

Longwave is a band that has been inculcated to Automatic for the People-era R.E.M., as well as most the bands from that era. This is not to say that they are necessarily dated or cliché, but to the contrary they start off “There’s A Fire” with a hard-hitting earworm of a track, replete with hard-hitting drums and snaky synth lines. The move towards and away from an intense sound during…

Evans Blue – S/T (CD)

I must admit, that I sometimes become confused with all the different bands that are coming forth with a newer rock type of sound. A few years back, there was some semblance of differentiation between them – one could understand what songs were Disturbed, which were Godsmack’s, and which ones Papa Roach cut. However, I’m seeing (or hearing) a little more collusion of these different styles in current rock music.
