CHTHONIC: Taiwanese Metal Exhibitionists To Release Seventh Studio Album

Taiwanese metal exhibitionists, CHTHONIC, are pleased to unveil their seventh studio offering. Entitled Bú-Tik, the ten track opus was recorded at Sweden’s Sweetspot Studio by producer Rickard Bengtson, who also worked on 2011’s critically-lauded Takasago Army full-length and finds the band sharpening their signature brand of self-dubbed symphonic “orient metal.”   With Bú-Tik, CHTHONIC continue their mission to build awareness of the myths of Taiwan and the tragic events in their country’s history. Based around the story…

The Henry Miller Memorial Library has for years attracted fans of the iconic American writer to its singular locale in Big Sur, where he spent 18 years of his life. Recently, the Library has become a nearly mythic destination for artists including Animal Collective, Neil Young & Pegi Young, the Fleet Foxes, Bill Callahan, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Grizzly Bear, Arcade Fire, The Flaming Lips, Beach House, Red Hot Chili Peppers,…

PlexusSlim Review

PlexusSlim rocks!!! Yep! That’s me! Taken about a year ago, I was carrying around an extra 30 lbs., pre-diabetic, high blood pressure, cholesterol at 240, and just plain miserable! Skeptical but willing to try anything (!), I started the 3 day Plexus sample…. And by the end of the second day, I was a PlexusSlim believer! More information can be found at PlexusSlim with Joel And in 10 weeks, I…

David Grubbs Plain Where The Palace Stood CD Review

I Started To Live When My Barber Died is the initial offering on Grubbs’ similarly-named title, and it immediately hits listeners with a frantic and dense arrangement. Grubbs comes off as a more polished Steve Lieberman, a hectic mélange of different elements and styles that will immediately draw attention. Ornamental Hermit is a track that slows things down to provide a complex set of arrangements that are extraordinarily smooth. Grubbs…

Midnight Oil Essential Oils CD Review

U2 may come to mind first when you think of 1980’s political rock bands, but Australia’s Midnight Oil were just as strident about filling their songs with strong political point of views – not exactly the norm in a music decade obsessed with inane lyrics (lest we forget, hair metal was born and raised in the 80’s and killed in the early 90’s). Their biggest hits were about the mistreatment…

PURPLEHAUS Music is excited to announce the release of the label’s debut album from Solardrive. Solardrive is the new music project from producer, label head and creative engineer Balthazar Getty. The Strap-Ons Geeking Dream CD Review

These guys are a 5 piece band from Norfolk, VA. They began 1996 out as the Pimps, are no strangers to a microphones, as they have released 3 7 inches, I EP, and 1 full length album. To add to this, they also have toured nationwide. I love bands that actually include lyrics sheets, and this album was made in 2000, has twenty five songs, and is on the World…

Straitjacket – Modern Thieves

Straitjacket is the closest thing that I’ve ever heard to the UK ’82 brand of oi! that has been recreated successfully in the US with only one band previously: Patriot. Straitjacket feels as if they were pulled through a time rift and forced to play in Oregon for the entirety of their career (which is running on 7 years right now). The tinny yet impressive guitars and bouncy beat is…

Sonny & the Sunsets premieres new single via NPR

Death? Afterworld? Android lovers dying in the streets bleeding green blood? Homeless girls? Dogs stranded here from other planets? What are Sonny & The Sunsets getting at on Antenna to the Afterworld, a fastmoving record of new wave synths and post punk beats? The murder of a close friend of the band led Smith to think a lot about death and life after death. Shortly after, a visit to a…

Wild Belle Isles CD Review

Keep You has a retro flair that looks back at sixties pop and rock, while having a pointed and angular flair that is similar to Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party. The melodies do well in worming their way into listener head, a trend that is continued with It’s Too Late. It’s Too Late has a funkiness that is built off the work of EDM and ska music, with sizzling horns…

Brick And Mortar And Love DVD Review

With all the excitement generated months before Record Store Day and the lines of folks waiting outside to get that their hands on vinyl the third Saturday of every April, you might have assumed the independent record store was doing just fine. As the documentary Bricks And Mortar And Love reminds us, in most cases, the small mom and pop record store is still barely surviving. The movie focuses on…

RABBITS: European Tour With Arabrot Nears

Pollutant Portland pack RABBITS prepare to pitch pellets at the European people as a preemptive pounce previous to their petulant split platter with pals Arabrot placates the populous.   Norway’s intangible, ever-changing, and ever-strange noiseniks ÅRABROT (whose album Solar Anus won the 2011 Spellemannprisen for Norway’s best metal record) meets Portland’s sludge-punk kings RABBITS (whose snarling 2012 album Bite Rites made many a year-end list). As if twins separated at…
