On their latest album, The Toadies shack up with Steve Albini to craft some enthralling stuff. The Charmer begins with Ash’s Theme, a taut rock track that immediately sets the stage for what’s to follow on the album. By putting the instrumental side of things to the front during the first minute, The Toadies ensure that the vocal sections make a huge splash when they start. Come to Life blends an earlier 1970s rock to a post-grunge arrangements. Jamming up the high registers with an assertive set of vox, this work is ready-made for placement on rock or alt playlists. As The Toadies move into the bridge, the wall of guitar fuzz acts as a reset before the band begins their descent.
I Wanted To Be Everywhere has The Toadies at their most deliberate, placing each guitar strum and drum hit with perfect precision. The instrumental interlude at around the :50 mark is delectable, showcasing a band that puts in their all even for the smallest stuff. I Walk A Line winds down the first half of The Charmer. The single has a bit of blues-rock while the belted-out vocals give fans something that they’ll be singing along with after the song ceases.
Get Out of Your Head and Damage end up being a powerful one-two for The Toadies, giving fans something meaty to sink into as the act begins to wind things down.
Throughout May and into August, The Toadies will be touring the United States. They’ve picked up a number of solid bands for some of these dates, including Vandoliers, Sparta, Local H, and Olive Vox. Visit their online store for different variants of The Charmer.
