Maradeen – Above the Horizon (CD)

On “Above the Horizon,” Nashville’s Maradeen manages to deftly blend pop with classic Southern Rock and a little bit of the 1970s Laurel Canyon sound for a nostalgic album crammed with sweet harmonies.

The Speed of Sound: Breaking the Barriers Between Music and Technology by Thomas Dolby

At this point there’s a pretty set template for writing rock memoirs (with a few exceptions, of course). Most roll out like a version of VH1’s Behind the Music: future rock star has dreams of making it big, so he practices all the time, stopping only for the occasion drug and drink binge; he/she hooks up with future band mates, they sign a really shitty record contract but end up…

Brandy Barrel-Aged Coffee Porter (Tusk & Grain)

Saint Archer has released some stellar offerings in their Tusk & Grain imprint but it was not until their latest bottle released that we had the chance to try them out. Mad Meg – Puberty Tales

Sky Grows Taller and Scary People are miles away from their general sound, but they represent a solid one-two punch on the Puberty Tales from Mad Meg. The slower tempo of SGT is a great way to introduce fans to Mad Meg, while the intense instrumentation and catchy punk/funk sound of Scary People ratchets up the momentum nicely.

Charlotte Berg – Let It Burn

The intense instrumentation that begins Charlotte Berg’s latest single Let It Burn (from her latest EP It’s the Damsel Who Decides) immediately gives something powerful for Charlotte to work off of. Berg’s talented enough to imbue each lyric and note with raw passion and emotion.

Big Star – Complete Third (CD Boxset)

If not for Big Star, the late great Memphis band that ran from ’72-to-’78 before finally calling it a day, we’d likely never have groups like Teenage Fanclub, R.E.M., The Replacements, The Posies… hell, Ryan Adams would probably be in a metal band now if it weren’t for Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel.
