ARMADILLO CHRISTMAS BAZAAR HISTORY:
The Bazaar’s roots trace back to the iconic Armadillo World Headquarters, a legendary venue known for its eclectic mix of music and arts. The Armadillo World Headquarters, founded in 1970, was a hub for Austin’s counterculture movement and a gathering place for musicians, artists, and creative talent. It became famous for its laid-back atmosphere and innovative programming. Artists like Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Emmyloo Harris and Elvis Costello used it to empower their careers.
The magic of the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar tradition was born in a fateful moment in 1975 when Bruce Willenzik, then kitchen manager of the Armadillo World Headquarters, now the Executive Producer of Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, and Lucinda Williams had a fortunate conversation. She made a casual comment that inspired Bruce saying it was too bad her artist friends did not have a warm, dry place to sell their art during Christmas.
As the Armadillo World Headquarters evolved, so did the Christmas Bazaar, which has since moved through various iconic Austin venues, including Cherry Creek Plaza, the Austin Opry House Ballroom (later named “The Terrace”), Austin Music Hall, and the Convention Center. Now hosted at the Palmer Events Center on Barton Springs Rd., the festival has maintained its commitment to the original spirit of the Armadillo World Headquarters—celebrating creativity and fostering artistic growth.
Armadillo producers Bruce Willenzik, Annie Harding, and Anne Johnson have dedicated themselves to supporting an ever-growing community of artists and musicians with the warmth of the holiday spirit in one of Austin’s longest running traditions.
