None of You is the first track on Brynja Rán’s Seven, and the single will immediately interest listeners due to the beautiful vocals and the ethereal, dreamy sort of pop instrumentation that points through at all the right points. During this introductory effort, fans will pick up hints of Bjork, Pulp, and Garbage. The presence of the horns and Brynja’s supersonic vocals during None of You’s chorus brings in just a hint of 1960s pop (think Nancy Sinatra). The layered approach to the song’s arrangements ensures that one will be able to play it multiple times to hear new twists and turns. Moving into Fool For A Lie, Brynja ratchets the brass up to 10 as the vocals bring in hints of Lily Allen and Corinna Bailey Rae. This is the track that we most imagine will garner popular radio and playlist placement. Simply sublime in its execution, the cut winds to a close as joyously as it began.
Bastard has a fun, funky sound to it. This is where Brynja is able to showcase her pure, unmodified self. The track absolutely defies genre conventions. While still something that fits in the pop genre, Bastard links dreamy pop with the temestuous singer-songwriter style of a Fiona Apple or Tori Amos.
Lullaby is siluated as the EP’s single, and I feel that Brynja has made the right decision. As with all of the songs on the Seven EP, the song succeeds because she is able to tie together styles that seem fairly different. This time around, there’s a bit of jazz and a bit of Sade tying themselves together with simply delicious Santana-inspired guitar work. A great way to end this release.
