One of the most talked-about places right now is the Illuminarium, which is located inside AREA15, an entertainment complex just a few minutes away from the main Strip. It is often described as an immersive museum, but honestly, it feels more like stepping directly inside a video game or a virtual reality headset without actually having to wear anything on your head.
The whole concept behind the Illuminarium was created to make visitors feel like they are completely surrounded by different worlds. Huge 4K laser projection systems are used to cover the walls and floors with moving images. Because of this, everywhere you look, something dynamic is happening. It isn’t just a static gallery where pictures are hung on a wall for people to walk past. Instead, the images are projected all around you, and even the ground under your feet responds when you walk across it. Special sensors are hidden in the floor, so when you step in a certain spot, things like dust, water ripples, or glowing stars will move around your shoes.
There are different exhibits shown depending on when you go. For example, one popular show is centered around space exploration. In that show, planets, rockets, and galaxies are projected onto every surface, making you feel like you are floating right through the solar system. Another popular experience is a virtual safari, where wild animals are brought to life in full size right next to you. To make everything feel even more realistic, custom scents and sound systems are used throughout the room. If a lion walks past in the show, the sound is felt through vibrations in the floor, and subtle smells of the outdoors are pumped into the room.
Going through the venue takes about an hour or so, depending on how long you want to sit around and take pictures. Speaking of pictures, it is definitely a popular spot for people who like posting on social media because the lighting effects look really neat in videos. However, it can sometimes get pretty crowded on weekends, which makes it a little harder to get clean photos without other people standing in the background.
Overall, the Illuminarium is a really unique place to visit if you are in Vegas and want a break from standard tourist activities.
