One of the faster reads of zines I’ve had the experience to pick up from the free table at UPC/AMC, Cornelia Cartoonz reads (at times) like a mixture of the Boondocks and Doonsbury, and at other times like Dilbert mounting Cathy. Yes, folks, Cornelia Cartoonz is a much more comic-strip reading comic than actually being a coherent set of stories involving a dynamic character. Vaguely political in its’ contempt for the necessity of the war, in that Cornelia is visited by her long-dead grandpa (I think) and told that to do her American duty is to shop, to max out her credit cards, and the like. However, this political commentary does not last, or is modified into a criticism of organizations that promise quick diplomas or those companies which work in tandem with the fly-by-night diploma companies. As for the art in the zine, it is as if Kel is the encino man working instead from the 1940’s instead of whatever era Brendan Frazier so poorly acted a part. Typical sentiments with average art equals something that while good, is not absolutely essential for continued reading or even purchasing.
