Asylum is Left Coast’s Belgian Triple, and the brewery has barrel-aged this beer and infused the effort with coffee beans. What results here is a very complex effort that will provide imbibers with a different constellation of flavors with each subsequent sip. The coffee flavors are front and center here, but this is a more moderate, sweeter brew (light roast). When coupled with the notes from the barrel-aging, there is a creamier, vanilla-forward taste that concludes with the inimitable zing of the tripel.
The alcohol presence (12.0%) is hidden well with these bold flavors, meaning that individuals will be presented with a sweet effort that veers at points into a bourbon/whiskey mindset and into a candi sugar / Belgian strong ale-esque effort at others. The BA Asylum is able to lock into these flavors throughout all points of the 22 ounce bottle, maintaining good amounts of fruit and spice from beginning to end. Dark fruits and a little bit of spice are able to join in with the coffee to create something that is unique and delectable. Where there can be a little bit of sharpness with the triple style, Left Coast is able to create something polished and perfect for pairing with burgers, pork, and strew. This formidable ale is more than enough to stave off the late night chill in campsites and those moments before the sun rises.
