Before the Trip

There were a numnber of times over the years that I have looked at the rates for a Great Wolf Lodge location and had been scared away. The rooms typically end up at around $300 a night during normal visits, and that’s to say nothing about the parking charge. Luckily for us, the newly redesigned Great Wolf Lodge location in Grapevine, Texas (a suburb of Dallas and a stone’s throw away from Fort Worth) had removed the resort fee from the nightly charge. During one of the company’s sales, I was able to get a room for myself and my daughter for a bit under $200. That’s still more than we would normally pay for a hotel, but this Texas location has a ton of activities that make the cost a value.

Tips to find the best deals

Many of the parents that have considered an overnight visit to a resort know to add their email address to the company’s mailing list. However, that’s only one part of the steps that I took to bring the cost more in line with what I would normally spend. Most credit cards have a travel program (e.g. American Express, Chase) that provides purchases with some level of discount. I used the CapitalOne browser plugin to receive some cash back from the transaction.

Other parents may be able to go in Dutch with friends to bring the room cost down. Speaking from experience, the size of the base-level Great Wolf Lodge room is expansive enough that a few adults and kids could share the booking without feeling too cramped. Other suites at Great Wolf Lodge are rated for 8-10 residents with only a minor increase to the per-night cost.

The water attractions

While the specific type of water attactions vary based on the specific franchised location that one attends, the set of activities available to the Grapevine attendees are pretty numerous. The wave pool ended up being the most populated both days we attended, but ended up having the most replay value. This is because the pool itself varies in depth to provide one with a wholly different experience whether they are in the 2- or 5-foot depth.

One of the best things that we experienced was the temperature of the water. The company touts that it is 84 degrees, and for our time at the resort, that seemed accurate. During our visit (middle of winter), there was a bit of a briskness that could be felt as you left the wave pool to go to the lazy susan or the variety of water slides.

Magiquest

Not everything at the Great Wolf Lodge had to do with water features. The interactive Magiquest game that the company offers was a solid way to spend an hour. All one needs to do is pop on down to the wand shop to purchase the aforementioned item (other accoutrements are available, including clothing and add-ons that provide further buffs for players) and then they can play the game as intended. The different trees, chests, and monitors are dotted through the resort’s floors. Luckily for us, these placements are fairly front and center in the resort than being placed at the extreme ends of the hallways.

As it was still the winter months when we took our trip to Great Wolf Lodge, many of the public spaces were decorated with holiday lights. The visual side of the resort really shone brightly during nighttime, as there were projectors showcasing a variety of designs outside. What I found most interesting were the all-ages yoga sessions. As long-time readers of NeuFutur know, we have always desired to promote fitness in all its various forms – instilling stretching with a little bit of fun is a great way to build up a long-time love for fitness and exercise.

Food and Dining Options

The Great Wolf Lodge makes it easy to plan out a variety of meals during a family’s stay. Of course, there are microwaves and refrigerators for those that wish to stop at a nearby grocery store. For those that want to have the full Great Wolf Lodge experience, this resort’s sit-down dining option continues a wide array of food. Primarily done in a style that is American fare with small deviations, this ensures that the younger set will be able to find something that they can nosh. In addition, there is a c-store option that directly abuts a Starbucks location for those that need to recharge. For parents, the upstairs bar provides a way to break from the sometimes-noisy bottom floor.

Other attractions for land-lovers (lubbers?)

For those that have a longer trip set up for Great Wolf Lodge, the resort has a number of activities to keep kids of all ages interested and happy. In the promenade that precedes the water park portion, Grapevine’s Great Wolf Lodge has a bowling alley and arcade. The latter was of particular interest to us, as there are a number of distinct video games and skill machines that can be played fairly cheaply. Grapevine’s Great Wolf Lodge has a mini-Topgolf secreted within for those that may need to keep keen on their greens game.

Great Wolf Lodge’s safety and security

The one worry I had before we started our trip was the relative level of safety of the attached parking lot. Where there were numerous signs informing lodgers to lock their vehicles, there was a calmness to the lot that was only punctuated at points by other families getting forgotten toys and the like. There was ample lighting throughout this parking lot and the ticket kiosk further decreased the potential of ne’er-do-wells to rifle through vehicles.

Epilogue

While the time that we spent at the Grapevine Great Wolf Lodge was fantastic, my child’s mood became a little dour when she realized she left her favorite Pokemon at the resort. Luckily for us, all it took to locate it was a call in to the front office. Great Wolf Lodge has a ticketing system that makes locating lost items a snap. It took less than a week for the plush toy to make its way back home.

No matter where you are located in the United States, Great Wolf Lodge has a location fairly close to you. Utilize common sense if you’re working within a budget – the company’s limited time offers provide the biggest sort of discounts during weekdays and on weekends that are decently far away from major holidays (e.g. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Spring Break). For those that wish to visit the park during the daytime, passes are available.
