Detroit native and current NYC resident Alex Winston released her debut album King Con early in 2012 and garnered critical acclaim for her uncanny ability to craft songs that remain with any listener. Having been compared to the likes of Joanna Newsom, Lykke Li, PJ Harvey, and Kate Bush, Winston returns to the public forum with “101 Vultures” highlighting her unique ghostly vocals and lush melodies. With this piece she…
Sylvan Esso is a collaboration between vocalist Amelia Meath and electronic musician Nick Sanborn. Meath’s powerful voice is front and center, unjoined by fellow harmonizers as it is in her folk group, Mountain Man. Sanborn, who plays bass in the genre-destroying Megafaun, creates intricate, pulsing grooves for Meath’s voice to inhabit. The pair’s debut is the Hey Mami / Play It Right 12″, a “single” with 2 A sides, featuring…

Mind Equals Blown – Game Changer might be relatively unknown, but their mix of crisp pop-punk with strong vocals is sure to please fans of anyone from Title Fight to The Wonder Years. AMH Network – The band have only been together for a few months forming at a local The Wonder Years show, however, if Three Years is anything to go by, they will be a band to keep an eye out…
The London-born singer, songwriter, and producer Joel Compass offers an impressive combination of undeniable talent and huge commercial appeal. His new EP Astronaut follows the hugely successful single of the same name. Centered on Joel’s sexy falsetto, and with beats that reference everything from trap to house, it comes at exactly the right time in this future-pop zeitgeist moment. Astronaut’s overall sound draws heavily on the UK underground, but Joel’s…
The Jitterbug Vipers specialize in a cult jazz offshoot called “viper jazz,” a screeching U-Turn back to the party where jazz music packed the dance floor and dazzled the audience with brilliant streams of improvisatory musicianship. Steeped in the ribald wit, quaint sophistication, and graceful virtuosity of classic artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie, the Jitterbug Vipers make the sound their own. “We don’t think of ourselves…

This is an exciting time for the London based Gospel group Brian Martin & Worship 4 Life. With their two singles “Deliverance In Praise (D.I.P.)” and“Just For Who You Are” currently impacting radio in the States, this universal group is also preparing for two extensive tours in the U.S. and Asia in fall of 2013. Brian Martin & Worship 4 Life’s two singles are huge representations of their current project Deliverance in Praise, which was…
Man, sometimes CDs have a look that is completely unlike the style or substance of the band that resides inside. This is the case with Zero To Sixty Never who come out with this EP in a black and white CD slipcover, and then proceed to come out with “My Julia Roberts Cameo”. In the vein of Unwritten law or New Found Glory, albeit with a twinge of more…
The scratching and sampling of the beginning moments of “You Oughta Know” should remind individuals of artists like The Avalanches and Kid Koala; the sultry vocals that come soon after are a direct blend of Portishead and The Propellerheads. Of course, this is a cover of Alanis Morrisette’s original track, and the vocals pretty much stick to the blueprint that Morrisette created in the original; where the two tracks do…
The one thing that I wonder about Zozobra is how they were able to get on Hydra Head. The style of music that they play on tracks like “The Blessing” is pure stoner meets gruinge rock. One hears hints of early Tool, Alice in Chains, and Temple of the Dog in “Harmonic Tremors”. This is not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination, but the approachability of…
As vegetarians, we like to think that we are fit and have our weight under control. The good news is that we’re in better shape than our omnivore friends, but obesity is still a real problem. For example, a study of women in Sweden showed that 40% of those who were omnivores were overweight or obese. That figure went down to 29% for semi-vegetarians and vegans, and down…

Two years after “Poetry & Science-Fiction”, my cpu and I are proud to present new paths in our cognitive & sensitive relationship. The internal man/machine device helped me to be more attentive to my electronic partner and to develop along with it unknown feelings that we transform into music. Music from ancient times and music from the future, created for the brain and the heart. “And now, flow my tears…

Adam Zwig is a musician that has been putting in work for a number of years; Visions Of The Shimmering Night is his fifth album, and was produced by Stuart Sikes (Modest Mouse) and David Bianco (Tom Petty). Everybody Love is a tremendous opening effort for Zwig. During this introductory track, Adam is able to provide listeners with directions for where he’ll ultimately go on the album. These thematic touches…
Living Proof is the first introduction that listeners will likely have for Perala’s music, and it allows listeners to be entranced by her inimitable style. The track soars on plinking pianos and a vocal style that takes on hints of Sheryl Crow and Stevie Nicks. While Perala’s vocals are front and center, the instrumental arrangements present here provide a very thoughtful backdrop. Fine uses an interesting differentiation between the vocal…
