Gil Shaham Plays Brahms Violin Concerto with San Francisco Symphony (Nov 23-26) and with Boston Symphony in L.A. (Dec 10)

Having just added Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year award to his numerous honors, master violinist Gil Shaham drew warm praise for his season-opening performances of Brahms’s Violin Concerto with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. The New York Times reported that “he played with his customary depth and charisma, particularly impressive in the first-movement cadenza,” while Lehigh Valley Music noted, “Shaham’s wild flights of virtuoso fancy, especially in the spellbinding first…

Cave Story 3D (Nintendo 3DS)

Few games have had the ability to properly engage the Nintendo 3DS. This means that there is little reason to pick up the console. However, I believe that the execution of Cave Story 3D is strong enough that it should be seen as a deciding factor for whether an individual purchases the console. Cave Story 3D is a side-scrolling shooter that will take players no time to learn, but a…

Apparat – Devil’s Walk (CD)

There is a timeless quality to Devil’s Walk that will make it particularly germane to any fan of electronic music, whether it be the early work of Kraftwerk, the New Wave era, or something newer. This is because each of the 10 tracks that are on Devil’s Walk are able to speak singularly and as a larger effort. The title begins with Sweet Unrest, a track that touches upon the…

Nikoli’s Pencil Puzzle 3D (Nintendo 3DS)

Puzzle games have usually been much too easy for me, or have such a learning curve to the title that it seems impossible to properly insert oneself into the title. However, Nikoli’s Pencil Puzzle 3D is a game that avoids these pitfalls and is ultimately one of the best puzzle games this year. This is because it takes advantage of the Nintendo 3DS well, and has a game play style…

Radical Dads Release Daytrotter Session

Radical Dads is a band that sounds like standing next to a body of water and noticing that something is moving just underneath the surface and then realizing that actually nothing is moving, it’s just that your glasses are broken and you have no idea how it happened. Also your elbow is scraped up and you think something just caught on fire in the distance — you can see the…

Volcanic Sunlight by Saul Williams

Some listen to music to reinforce a mood, an idea of a time/place, to embody a mind-state, a lightness, to sharpen or dull an edge. I make music to jump off of that edge and explore. I’ve been exploring since birth, whether wandering through the woods as a child, through the streets of NY as a teenager, backpacking through South and Central America, India, Africa, touring and performing in over…
