lightningbug zine #4

This zine reminded me a lot of Ker-bloom, without all the overblown papers and stamps and everything. Detailing her early life, the zine talks about the first American address that she had (she’s from Canada), and the emotionality of her early years, culminating in a move after her brother died. The narrative hops in years from when she moves to America to when she moves to the second California address…

NeuFutur Magazine Introduces Silverhawk

Silverhawk The Densmore Bros. (Sam and John), lead Silverhawk a Psychedelic/Americana/Rock n Roll Family Circus from Portland, Oregon. “Indie Rock for a new generation. And that’s a very good thing indeed.” Aiding and Abetting, 2004 Tar-black humor hangs in the air onstage as the Densmore Bros trade guitar, bass and lead vocal duties. Never missing a beat, they harmonize over adventurous sonic landscapes swollen by Anthony Cotham and Rob Allisons’s…

Conchita’s Collective – So It Goes

Conchita’s Collective – So It Goes / 2008 Self / 7 Tracks / http://www.myspace.com/conchitascollective / Conchita’s Collective plays a style of pop music that draws heavily on the dominant styles of the late nineties. It is not a surprise ten that “Just Time” is a track that slowly slinks around, sunny in disposition, while the vocals touch slightly at an early Nelly Furtado type of sound. The energy picks up…

Mirror-Mirror

Mirror-Mirror / :10 / 8L / freeohio@worldnet.att.net / 83 Charlotte St, Akron Ohio 44303 / I do not know where I have seen this style before: Mirror-Mirror is a collection of comic strips by Chrid Pelrine, and manage to tell a snippet of a story even considering the fact that they are contained on one page. The style in which Chris captures eir subjects is interesting to say they least:…

Joan of Arc – Boo Human

Joan of Arc – Boo Human / 2008 Polyvinyl / 14 Tracks / http://www.polyvinylrecords.com / It has been a while since we heard anything from Polyvinyl Records. We gradually drifted apart after The Red Hot Valentines disintegrated, and while there were a few more albums we received, nothing seemed to really capture our attention as much as an RHV album did. The stunning vocals that are the focal point to…

NeuFutur Magazine Introduces Alexa Wilkinson

ALEXA WILKINSON is more than meets the eye. Her pretty, girl-next-door face on a petite 5-foot 4-inch frame suggests nothing of the emotional maturity displayed in her debut album “Lullaby Appetite,” now available on iTunes and scheduled for public release this June through DNK Records. Alexa’s evolution into a musical artist originated from common childhood experiences.

Melt Volume 2 Issue 5

Melt Volume 2 Issue 5 / Free / :15 / 48S / http://www.meltmag.com / I really don’t know what to feel about these various city-related magazines. They are (almost) always free, but to be honest, the amount of interesting content is seriously lacking. This issue seems pretty much dictated by the advertisers and what is famous; there are pieces about Gwen Stefani, King Kong, and Kottonmouth Kings. Of course, the…

Little Maestros – Postcards From My Mind / 2008 Kid Rhino / 28 Tracks / http://www.littlemaestros.com / http://www.kidrhino.com / Before I picked up “Postcards From My Mind”, I had no idea who the Little Maestros were or what they were trying to do. The hits keep coming from the Red Leader camp these days as label has just released an extremely limited, hand-numbered 10-inch picture disc featuring four amazing covers from four amazing bands.
