Quiet Life is a candle with ecstatic wax and wick, modern burn and recycled light. Their blend of classic country/folk and indie/rock is one of the most genuine combinations being fused across modern America. Hailing from the whaling city of New London, Connecticut, these two brothers [Sean and Ryan Spellman] and two best friends [Craig Rupert and Paul Dutton] have all the sincerity of their great folk predecessors, influenced by…
Demeanor – Shoulders Full of Nazis / 2008 Mayday Mayday Records / 5 Tracks / http://www.myspace.com/demeanorgrind Franklin Kentucky’s Demeanor brings a lot to the table. The two piece toured the country for nearly a year under the moniker Meandmyfriendcoty before changing their name to Demeanor and releasing “Shoulders Full of Nazis†on Mayday Mayday Records. My only complaint with “Shoulders full of Nazis†is that there isn’t more for me…
Slug #230 / Free / 1:15 / 84M / http://www.slugmag.com / This issue marks the 19th anniversary for Slug Magazine. Congrats are in order. I’ve been receiving their zine for about a year now, and they have continually found ways to make enough money to keep publishing while still providing a great deal of information to anyone that wishes to read their magazine. As one has learned to expect, there…
La Scala plays the kind of music found in the Sicilian alleys frequented only by the forlorn street singer, or in the smoky cabarets of prewar Paris, or in the tiny hillside villages of the Eastern bloc, tucked away all those years behind that iron drapery. It is this spirit, this old world sense of melody, that La Scala employs with such expert skill, creating a sound that is equal…

Glendale Boulevard-Issue 5. Wow, five issues in, from the former writer for my old rag, Amish Drive By. As the years pass, the friendship that we once shared has become a chilly acquaintanceship, not enough to deter my review. Like many of the better zines out in the world today, Glendale Boulevard heavily uses pictures to break up the tedium of an all-text magazine. The half-size format condenses the magazine…

Barry Manilow: Songs From The Seventies / 2008 Rhino / 75 Minutes / http://www.rhino.com / Individuals that watch a lot of PBS likely saw the special that this DVD set chronicles. However, this DVD set has a great deal of material that never got off the cutting room floor. Three distinct tracks were excised due to time and other constraints: “Who’s Been Sleeping In My Bed?â€, “The Way We Were…
Pie Boys Flat hit the NYC music scene in 2003 with their unique blend of Reggae, Blues, and Funk. Their writing shows influences ranging from Bob Marley to Jack Johnson to Sublime to Paul Simon and has melded into a form of ethnic Rhythm and Blues that sits firmly in the pocket of a style all its own. Laced with soaring three-part harmonies, their music is the manifestation of a…
Chili Jackson – S/T / 2007 Conscious / 3 Tracks / http://www.consciousrecordsmusic.com / The soulful, slow style of rock that Chili Jackson plays does not have an easy set of influences to decipher. The style of music that Jackson opens up this self-titled disc, during “Whyâ€, is something that individuals have heard before but cannot pin down. The track is catchy and even sounds a little on the happy side…

The Aristocats: Special Edition / 2007 Buena Vista / 79 Minutes / http://www.disneydvd.com / I still remember that time when Disney VHS copies of certain movies were going for well over $100. It seems as if Disney is a little more generous when it comes to releasing more material from their value, judging from this copy of “The Aristocatsâ€. Instead of just being the same exact movie without anything in…

Get the Strap #3 A5/16 pages-$1/trade. The third issue in a zine that always maintains to crack me the fuck-up, Get the Strap #3 is in actuality a stronger issue then the 2nd one. From the cover picture being that of Kris Kross, to the end article detailing the entirety of the Rocky movies, Mike and Jay shit out another amazing issue. I must admit, I actually learned something of…
Chicago jazzman John Temmerman’s got numbers on the brain, but music in the blood. While many part-time musicians divide their time between career and art, Temmerman carries his passion for jazz into work on Monday and weaves his knowledge of numbers in the night club air on Friday nights. As the saxophonist and leader of the John Temmerman Jazz Obsession Quartet, Temmerman successfully demonstrates the inadequacy of the term “moonlighting”…
Steve Lieberman – Shake The Missile Base / 2007 Self / 22 Tracks / http://www.gangstarabbi.com / Despite the fact that I already know most of the ongs that Lieberman puts on eir “cover†albums, I rather prefer the albums that have a large amount of unique material on them. This gives me more of a sense of what Lieberman wants to do with music, rather than having eir constrained by…
Miwa Gemini! US Tour dates announced! This Is How I Found You, the new album by New York chanteuse Miwa Gemini, takes on the darkest affairs of the heart with a saccharine smile and haunting vocals you won’t hear anywhere else. A multi-instrumentalist, Miwa incorporates guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano to drive powerful songs of loss and redemption: Think Nina Simone meets Sparklehorse meets Cat Power, and you’re getting close.…
Family Ties: The Third Season / 2008 CBS / 573 Minutes / http://www.paramount.com/homeentertainment / As individuals remember, Family Ties was about the Keaton family, their lives, and the numerous events that happened to them. This box set collects the third season (the 1984-1985) seasons, not cutting out anything in the way of the 24 episodes that aired (and Paramount actually adds some bonus features, to boot). This season features the…
