Bulletproof Messenger – Arm Yourself (CD)

The inclusion of a more electronic sound to a hard, modern rock sound is something that I’ve personally never heard in the genre. Kudos to Bulletproof Messenger for having the cohones to blend together this style, making “Arm Yourself” an intense, impassioned bit of rock that soars on the wings of this electronic side. Nowhere is this captured as well as during “Lose It All”, which bounces back and forth…

Flashback: Alexander Hacke – Sanctuary (CD Review)

I should have expected experimental music from one of the Einsturzende Neubauten band members, but still, the opening track “Minnie & Me” shocked me at the first go around. The vaguely-tribal, ghostly vocals present on that track cannot be anything but disjointed, and I almost feel as if Hacke’s purpose with this track is provide a disjointed viewpoint. The second track, “Sister” is just the incorporation of Bon Jovi-esque guitar…

Old Spice Pro-Strength Anti-Perspirant: Swagger

As part of our fashion and beauty section, we here at NeuFutur will be looking in the next few months at the whole range of products designed to make individuals look, feel, and smell good. We were lucky enough to hook up with Old Spice, who sent along a number of their current offerings. One of these was the “Swagger” fragranced-anti-perspirant effort in their Pro-Strength line.

Year of the Dragon – Blunt Force Karma (CD)

Year of the Dragon is the latest act by Dirty Walt Kibby from Fishbone, and it shows that even someone as storied as Kibby continue to innovate and blindside fans with intelligent arrangements, impassioned lines, and a hell of a lot of grit and fire. While the introduction gives listeners a little bit of an idea where Year of the Dragon will go with “Blunt Force Karma”, “Ipso Facto” really…

MLB 10: The Show (Playstation 3)

This is the most realistic baseball game that I have ever played, and this is coming from someone that was absolutely astounded when titles like RBI Baseball first dropped. Where there seems to be a small layer of polish placed on subsequent iterations of a seasonal title, Sony has ensured that there are significant upgrades to both the control and the visual components of the title. The customization of the…

Honey Brown (Beer)

Honey Brown is a beer that has always been approachable in price while still having a pretty solid flavor and taste when compared to microbrewery efforts, but I must admit that I hadn’t had one in a few years. We were lucky to hook up with Honey Brown’s publicist a few days ago and get a sample shipped out. After chilling out in the fridge, we were able to give…

Doris: An Anthology of Zines + Other Stuff 1991-2001

While we here at NeuFutur had a chance to get cracking with a review of Doris #15 a few weeks ago, we were able to get through this massive collection of reprinted Doris issues just yesterday. These prints are sharp, ensuring that the original subject material is captured perfectly. The zine itself bounces from hand-written to typed to gussied up with different drawings and backgrounds, while the written material seemingly…

Carmen Tosca – Wind (CD)

“Il Pleure Dans Mon Coeur” has a shuffling feel to it that showcases the nuanced and complex nature of Carmen Tosca’s work, and the track’s length (topping out at around 9:45) ensures that there is more than enough time to go through different genres and styles before the track closes up. There are hints of ethereal, electronic, dance, tropical, and even goth music to be had here. The spontaneous nature…

Absinthe Junk – Living Ghosts (CD)

Get drunk on the Dragonberry and watch free cable tv thanks to the free cable television deals at Tv-Providers.com, where you can also get a dish satellite antenna! “Commercialized Waste” begins “Living Ghosts”, and showcases Absinthe Junk as an act that is eclectic, to say the least. There are hints of heavy metal, punk, and goth music all fighting for dominance. What results with a track like “Commercialized Waste” is…

Greg MacPherson Band – Night Flares (CD)

“Night Flares” showcases the Greg MacPherson Band in a very Delirious-like state; “Two Haircuts in One” has incredible similarities to tracks like “ Gravity”. The same soulful set of vocals and jangling guitar, topped off by a work-horse set of drum makes this track sparkle in its pedestrianness. This same laidback sound continues in “Kingston”, which is maintained even through the gradually increasing intensity of MacPherson’s vocals. The same general…

Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan (4.02% ABV)

While we have had a few nut and brown ales over the course of our post-21 years, I feel that the Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale put out by Lazy Magnolia is one of the beast efforts that we have tasted in the style. The label itself is fairly nondescript, blending tan with brown lettering, while the beer’s color is rendered invisible by the brown color of the bottle.

Pony Friends 2 (Nintendo DS)

After a long time reviewing the RPG side of Square Enix’s efforts, it seems only fair that we here at NeuFutur are looking into their sim games. Pony Friends 2 is a game designed for the younger set, but it contains more than enough game play elements to keep older individuals interested. The customization side of things is present on the onset, with players allowed to change up their own…

Doris #15 (Zine)

Doris is one of those magazines that has been around since I first got into the creative zinemaking process. It still stands as a high water mark that I could only wish to aspire to. This issue of Doris represents a reprint of materials from about a decade ago, and while there has been a significant amount of time that has passed, a great deal of the information here still…

Room Full of Strangers – We’re All Living The American Dream (CD)

“My American Dream” comes forth with Room Full of Strangers taking on Glenn Danzig-era Misfits to craft something that will play well on any hard rock radio station. The act is not that straightforward, as it becomes obvious after a few listens that Room Full of Strangers calls forth the spirit of a scintillating blend of rock and heavier acts. “The Night That Could Never End” continues this trend, with…

IS Vodka (80 Proof)

There is a classic quality to the bottle design of IS Vodka that will ensure that purchasers will immediately place it in the front and center of their liquor cabinet. Whether it the column-like design of the bottle or the metal stopper on the top, there is a decidedly Art Deco feel to IS. IS first hit American shores late in 2008, and still seems to be catching on here.…

Xerography Debt #25 (Zine)

Xerography Debt is one of the only print zines still available that makes the zining world their primary focus. Where it seems at the beginning of the issue that Davida was about ready to throw in the towel, Joe (Microcosm) gave eir the spark necessary to continue with this plump and lush-looking issue. The issue continues with a typical letters to the editor section, while the columns that follow afterwards…

360 Vodka (80 Proof)

360 Vodka is a green version of an alcoholic spirit, whether it be through the reclaiming of glass for the bottle or the use of recycled paper for the label. Where that could be about it with the creators raking in all sorts of money from the green scene, 360 Vodka comes forth as one of the better vodkas that we have had the chance to taste since we have…

Burn Collector #14

While we have reviewed other Al Burian titles in the past, this is the first time that we have covered a Burn Collector issue. This small tome bounces back and forth between comics and narratives, allowing individuals to see the different approaches that Burian can take. Where the discussion of the Chicago bus lines seems to go on for a little long of a period, Burian’s deconstruction of the Dan…

Alphanaut – Out Of Orbit (CD)

“Timid Creature” is the first track on “Out Of Orbit”, establishing Alphanaut as an act that can skillfully move through a number of musical genres, eras, and influences. This means that the track touches upon acts like Depeche Mode, New Order, and even Lou Reed at points. There is a retro feel to “Out Of Orbit” that keeps individuals listening in, while Alphanaut takes complete care to make each track…
