Transcendence #5

This is another great issue of Transcendence, which if you have not read my prior reviews of the zine, is a zine written by various transgendered individuals and put together by the fabulous Jamez. Specifically, in this issue we are treated to a piece by Olivia, in describing eir’s week, changing between andro rocker to femme to something more than that. Other pieces in this issue that rank right up…

Transcendence #2

Transcendence #2 / 20 Pages / Half Size / [email protected] / Jamez Terry c/o SMYAL , 410 7th St SE , Washington, DC 20003. Another issue of one of the best (and cheapest) zines compiling pieces by some of the most interesting transgendered, differently sexed, pansexual, and other individuals who identify as more than male or female. With some snazzy cover art of two robots, one already knows that this…

Transcendence #1

I picked up this magazine at the table at the 2002 UPC. I just realized that this zine is put out by Jamez Terry, the zinester also behind Sex, Death, and Ronald McDonald. All and all, this zine is septic while being personal, all computer laid out but still having some of the feel that the cut and paste zines have. Excerpts from journals mesh themselves with different poetry as…

Toxic Flyer #34

Another newsprint magazine that has interview after interview, seemingly never ending, but after the first half of the magazine, we are assaulted with another large chunk of material in the form of reviews. The last chunk of the magazine has a few show reviews, as well as zine reviews, a rare presence in most larger punk magazines in the day. What is nice about Toxic Flyer is the sheer amount…

tourist

Tourist – ¼ size, 16 pages. The whole zine is a cut’n’paste endeavour that is very like the stream-of-consciousness rants popularized by such people as James Joyce. The background pieces fit what is said on the page, and are interesting in their own right. Only truly making sense in tourist are the penultimate pages, which contain a page of thoughts and a page of contact information. Sorry, but I really…

Touched By An Anvil #14

Touched By An Anvil #14 – 56 Pages – 1/4th size. By far, this magazine stands out in all departments except that in the spelling, which does show effort. But I kid, and this magazine mops the fllor with the sorry ass of mine. Driven by a lot of humorous material, this magazine is an amazingly fast read, with the time-tested picture background with text overlay! And it even has…

Tight Pants #10

While I have been a fan of the other Tight Pants zine (being The World Would Be A Better Place If Everyone Wore Tight Pants), I hadn’t gotten a chance to go and read Tight Pants until I saw a copy for sale at Boxcar Books. After picking it up, it was definitely worth my buck. While all of the fonts that Maddy uses are just windows system-type of fonts,…

Thoughtworm #10

A diary-like zine, with a style of writing that is interesting to say the least. Information is given without much in the way of rhetorical flourishes, but there just seems to be a feeling of detachment from the events of Sean s life, a feeling which never truly goes away. This is not to say that it is hard to get into the zine, but that there is a nagging…

This is not a dream : december

Yet another zine by NeuFutur favorite Vera, but this time eir s creativity comes out in a very short and bizarre style of comic. A sort-of comic snapshot of Vera s life, each page details a different activity, whether it be wondering whether the dumpstered bagels ey s is eating are vegan, listening to Godspeed You Black Emperor!, or having a stomachache after reading Nieztche. Vera s style reminds us…

Think Again Vol. II: Issue 1

Without actually being able to see any of the issues in the previous volume of Think Again, one can only judge how the magazine is from the six-page newsletter that is this issue. This means painfully few articles dictate whether or not one will wish to return for this zine. The crew that creates Think Again is thankfully skilled enough in their writing to provide readers with a short and…

Think Again #1

With the most simplistic page design, Think Again goes into the most shallow detailing about whatever topic they decide to cover. Thus, maybe the layout works in their favor. This go around, Adam and the Think Again-ers do a mini-biography on Henry Kissinger, break down the dollar bill, and very briefly, cover some Awful Link of the Day material, in Websites Your Mom Won t Like . While each page…

Things You Never Said #1

The zinester that does this work is simply great. He is an adorable boy, but enough of that. The magazine is a salmon pink, and the magazine is not focused at all. This is a good thing, as even if a piece does not have its intended effect on a reader, the next piece isn t related at all, and the person has a better chance to like it. Strong…

Thermidor #2

When I first picked up Thermidor, I was afraid that it was yet another garbage, over-elitist film zine or gore-fest. Those kids really piss me off. However, Thermidor is a great zine, owing much to a varied style of layout, with just as adventurous of a stylistic flair by Kate. Moving through politics, personal life, and movies with the greatest of ease, there honestly no weak spot to be found…

Tell Me About The First Time You Came to ABC No Rio Part 2

The first installment of this magazine detailed a number of different individuals’ experiences at ABC No Rio, but seemed to focus on the earlier days of the building. This second issue is much more salient to me, because I am about the same age as a number of the people telling these stories. Of course, there are these stories that come from thirty-year olds detailing events that happened in 1990,…

Tell Me About The First Time You Came To ABC No Rio

Everyone has heard of ABC No Rio, but this is really a first (that I can tell). Enclosed within are a number of narratives spanning the space’s 25 years of existence, and really comes through as a nice (if short) remembrance of the joint. Even though this is 20 pages, the font is absolutely huge and could have been conceivably halved in size, in order to give more narratives space.…

TapeOp #36

Looking at CDs as the finished products they are is probably the farthest I’ve ever gotten into CD mixing and mastering at all, but TapeOp is a magazine that really caters to large amount of people. Most of what they are talking about in the numerous interviews with producers and band members can be broken down into relatively easy-to-understand terms. For those who might be interested in the topic and…

Supreme Nothing #14

Denny has put out this zine for a longer time than I’ve even been into zining at all, so ey knows what ey is doing. This issue takes place as a number of journal entries, and details a few key things to happen in Denny’s life. This includes having the Gods of noise punk, PG99, stay at eir apartment, having a fight with the followers of eir’s boyfriend’s band, and…

‘Sup #11

‘Sup is to interviews that Shredding Paper is to reviews. However, interviews can be constructed a myriad of ways and questions can be asked pretty much any way to get to any final point. To keep it short, interviews are a much more versatile way to get to know a band or act, and allow for the act to verify or deny certain things that must be taken as speculation…

Suburban Voice #46

Suburban Voice is another of the slew of magazines that I’ve just recently learned about as being hallmarks of a specific scene. #46 is the anniversary issue, and just by going through the zine, reasons for why exactly people still look up to this zine are presented over and over again. Primarily focusing on the hardcore scene (though they are open to some other forms of music), Suburban Voice has…

Stupid Comic Fliers

Essentially, all this issue is is a collection of fliers that Josh Redd Sanchez has created for concerts during the last few years. However, the evolution of the fliers is shown through a chronological arrangement and as such, we can start to notice the construction of a set of characters and story. The style is a very sketchy style and J.R.’s comedy properly shows the problems that plague many of…
