Stuff You #1

This is a zine that I traded for off the zinesters livejournal, and I am just pretty impressed with the orderliness of this zine. Everything, including text and pictures, is based on the straight-line, decreasing the chaos of the magazine and providing one with an even easier read. While this zine is short, I still feel like that I am able to gain from it the briefest glimpses of who…

Street Pixie #7

Street Pixie is a DIY/anarchist/nomad per-polit-zine. There are an incredible amount of pieces to feast upon in this issue for people of all stripes. There is poetry, prose, how-to pieces, art, and tons more. For one dollar, it really is a steal. The layout of the pieces is probably the only thing to be changed, as there seems to be various “lumps” of material that seem to drag the moment…

Stranger – one shot

Now, this will be one of the shortest reviews I’ve done, as about 95% of this zine is just blankness. However, the editor of this magazine has an affinity for late-1800’s drawings for products, and seemingly unrelated pieces of writing, such as a description of someone being called about a eclipse. A German (I think) worksheet is includes, and a stream-of-consciousness poem adorns the page adjacent. The zine is one…

Straint #3

You know, I was curious on what the term Straint actually was, so I decided that I would go look it up. It means nothing in the dictionary that I tried to look it up in. Oh well. The zine seems pretty normal, even a little bit boring from the front cover, but it is truly what is inside that counts for this magazine. By far, one of the funniest…

Starlit Fireball #5

Another of the excellent issues of this magazine by Brittanie McBride. I’ve really noticed that with each passing issue, the zine has became more and more professional and endearing. This is not to say that it was not endearing at the first, but I’ve really noticed Brittanie coming into her stride. The pinnacle of this issue, however, has to be the short story “Torn”, in which a homeless girl meets…

Starlit Fireball #4

Yet another issue of this fabulous zine put out by Brittanie. I understand that I’ve been reviewing these issues in a weird order, but I do hae some sort of system when it comes to reviewing. You see, I have a pile of zines sitting on my floor, and the new issues are thrown on the top. Whenever I grap a zine, it is probably going to be the newest…

Starlit Fireball #3

This is what I believe is the last issue of Starlit Fireball that I had to review. This issue, the one that started my love for the zine, seems so far back in my memory that I just had to read it again. Really, folks, this zine is bare bones compared to what the zine has become, especially in response to #5. This issue of Starlit Fireball is really just…

Starleen #3

This zine is pretty far off from the ones that I usually pick out. Not personal at all, the zine reads like a more serious version of READ magazine, with a number of political pieces (Arnold being governor, Solar housing, Palestine vs. Israel US spending), while throwing some other random pieces, including writing to McDonalds and reviewing Nickled and Dimed by Barbera Ehrenreich. The zine goes even more quickly than…

Tape Op #50

Tape Op is one of those zines that really have a double life, informing individuals through letters and interviews but also through the ample advertisements that find their way into the magazine. What seems to be the best thing about Tape op is that interested individuals that are in the field can get a free subscription. I do not honestly know where individuals would have to pay $4.50 for a…

Stopsmiling #25

This magazine makes me feel uncomfortable. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is a Yuppie magazine. This should not be a reason why people avoid Stopsmiling; rather, there are some interesting pieces in this issue of the magazine. I have absolutely no idea about any of the individuals that they cover in this issue of Stopsmiling; if that was their goal, they have succeeded completely. Of particular note this…

Stopsmiling #16

Stopsmiling is a magazine that is in a bizarre world – take an issue of ARTnews and make it not as interesting, not as funny, and one will have an idea of the general gist of Stopsmiling. The zine begins like many of the other glossy publications with an absolute assload of ads – 17 pages before anything remotely zine-related starts the zine off. The layout of the entire issue…

Quickdummies #16

Quickdummies #16 / $4 / Full-Sized / 96 Pages / 6810 Bellaire Dr, New Orleans, LA 70124 / http://www.geocities.com/QDzine / Quickdummies knows how to write reviews. Each individual disc reviewed is given a proper treatment, going into the hundreds of words instead of petering out at around 50. Other interesting pieces in this issue of Quickdummies would have to be “Flyer Invasion”, which is Bill’s showcase of some of eir’s…

The Pleiades #2

The Pleiades #2 – 52 pages – 1/4th size – I don’t know what to say about this magazine. I love it, and It is so stream-of-consciousness, but not about the same happening over and over. This draws you away from reality and puts you into a whole new world, where the words written by Miranda echo in your ears and you experience all that is said and more. The…

Standing Behind Me #5

Standing Behind Me #5 / :25 / $1 / Trade / 20 Pages / 1537 West Augusta Blvd #1, Chicago IL 60622 / [email protected] / http://www.beeffarm.org /  Another set of anecdotes by Dave, Standing Behind Me is a little longer in narration than Sebrakakku. Dave pulls from events beyond just the current, and as such, paints a wide swath of information about who ey is ad why ey is currently…

Stainless Steel Lens #1

Stainless Steel Lens #1 / $1 / 7 by 14 (about) / 24 Pages / Love Bunni Press, 2641 Euclid Heights #3, Cleveland Heights, OH 44106 This is probably the third photo zine I have ever gotten in my hands for review in NF/IS. The first was by an Albertan, and I believe it was named Dystopia (Dysphoria). It was a tiny zine that I managed to lose, like Pomegranate…

Spin January 2006

Spin January 2006 / $2.99 / 80M / http://www.spin.com /  Spin has been around for twenty years, so it may just be a little hard to come up with a review that says things that have not previously been said. Spin to me seems to be the younger person’s version of Rolling Stone; it is better informed than Clearchannel radio or Mtv, but still is about 6 months behind the…

The Special People’s Club #7

The Special People’s Club #7 / Forth-Sized / 52 Pages / Cubbie Hoover, PO Box 441, Seattle, WA 98101, [email protected] /  I love Cubbie, first off. Ey’s zines come out fairly often, and I’m on eir’s auto-send list. Talking to eir on AIM is a minor look into eir’s life, but it does nothing to really figure out who is Cubbie. The Special People’s Club goes so much more into…

The Special People’s Club #3

The Special People’s Club #3 / Fourth-Sized / 44 Pages / [email protected] /  While I have reviewed Cubbie’s latest issue in the past, I think that I owe it to eir that this earlier issue of The Special People’s Club gets reviewed. Cubbie packs this issue, just like all eir others, with so much about eirself that its not funny. It is literally like ey has talked to me over…

S particles of Super-Symmetry

S particles of Super-Symmetry / Half-Sized / 24 Pages / No Contact / I got this zine in trade, but it was a decent amount of time before I actually had some time to read it. This zine is really white – which I mean, there is an incredible amount of white space that is not being used by the three editors, Alphred A. Cash, Pants Manticore, and Frankee Shankley.…

So This is It #2

So This is It #2 / .50 / Fourth-Sized / 24 Pages / Eve, 4110 Hollybrook Ln, Houston, TX 77039 / This zine is purely a set of journal entries from the month around Christmas, and what happens to Eve during those time. We are slightly exposed to Eve’s friends and family, but pretty much only learn about the actions of the star person eirself. As for layout, the zine…
