I love Cubbie, first off. Ey’s zines come out fairly often, and I’m on eir’s auto-send list. Talking to eir on AIM is a minor look into eir’s life, but it does nothing to really figure out who is Cubbie. The Special People’s Club goes so much more into detail about Cubbie’s life than a simple livejournal post or chat on AIM could ever do, and we are assaulted at the beginning of the zine by a rapid grab of straws, rhetorically, by Cubbie. Discussing eir’s family in great detail, we end up learning a number of things about Cubbie, and eir’s formation of self. Learning various epiphanies about Cubbie, such as the fact that eir hates to be alone – don’t we all? – one learns to begin pulling for eir by the end of the zine. While the first half of the magazine shows the formation of the Cubbie that we know now, the second half is a discussion of Cubbie’s visit to the Portland Zine Symposium. Jumping from the Portland Zine Symposium to a rapid series of moves, from Florida to San Fran to Seattle, Cubbie ends the zine with reviews of a large number of zines that have affected eir in some way. The Special People’s Club literally has something for everyone, holding a highly literate tone, and still can pull at your heart strings like no other.
