Gladys Hardy – I Love Jesus But I Drink A Little / 2008 WEA / 25 Tracks / http://www.gladyshardy.com /

Individuals may not immediately know who Gladys Hardy is, but if they have seen the Ellen Degeneres show in the last few months, chances are good that they heard a call from Hardy. If you don’t watch the Ellen show (I know I don’t), Gladys Hardy also calls in to the Dudley & Bob show, a “morning zoo” type of radio show centered in the Austin, Texas area, hosted on KLBJ. Hardy is a grandmother from Texas, and leaves a number of voice mails in Degeneres’ box. Hardy’s popularity has increased so much in the last few months that Hardy has actually replaced the announcers that previously introduced Degeneres at the beginning of each episode of eir show.

“I Love Jesus But I Drink A Little” is a collection of a number of calls that Hardy has made, and showcases the most memorable of these. This means that “Get Off My Case”, “Boogie”, and “Bill In Nashville” are all present. In much the same way, “Ellen Calls Gladys” was another skit that individuals are likely to remember. The calls are all humorous and will likely bring individuals to think about their own family members. Understanding that some of these calls are quite short, WEA has placed enough of them on this disc to make the purchase price something that everyone can be happy. Whether or not Gladys is real is a question that is open for discussion, but one has to wonder whether it is a question that really matters. At the end of the day, who cares if the individual is real?

“I Love Jesus But I Drink A Little” is testament to the fact that old people are still interesting, and going to a grandmother (or grandfather’s) house should not always be seen as a chore. Hell, maybe your relations are like Hardy, or could regale you with stories that may touch on some of the same things that Hardy discusses during this CD. Regardless, if you like funny stories that are told in a way that will keep you interested, make sure to pick up a copy of “I Love Jesus But I Drink A Little.”
