“Blending her classical training, hip-hop loops and folk influences, Wells has developed a unique sound while touring” – NPR Performer, producer, singer and composer Emily Wells recently saw the release of her acclaimed new album Mama, on Partisan Records, where her varied use of classical and modern instrumentation was embraced by many. Her deft approach to live sampling at shows helped her to amass a large following over the years as well. Just off a coast-to-coast tour with the Portland Cello Project, Emily Wells is now the subject of a brand new LaundroMatinee session recorded live with the Big Car Service Center in Indianapolis as a backdrop, where she performs “Mama’s Gonna Give You Love” as well as “Symphony 1 In the Barrel of a Gun,” taken from her previous album The Symphonies: Dreams Memories & Parties. Also recently, Anticon artist Baths (aka Will Wisenfeld) recently got ahold of the album’s opening track “Piece of It,” and dropped a graceful, evocative remix which was premiered on RCRD LBL. Emily has a handful of upcoming lives dates remaining in the Northwest. If you haven’t seen Emily live yet, don’t miss your chance. Full dates are below. Three years later, Wells returns with Mama, a collection of songs as richly hued as ever, but imbued with a newfound warmth no doubt owing to the space it was conceived in. Wells rented a tiny cabin on a Topanga Canyon horse ranch and went to work, producing Mama and playing most of the instruments herself (with a little help from longtime touring companions, drummer Sam Halterman and bassist Joey Reina). She recorded the raw tracks to tape without punch-ins or loops, often in one take. In contrast to The Symphonies, these songs are less conceptual and experimental in both sound and content, and more traditional and universal in structure and the studies of love and grief. 2012 will find Wells touring behind Mama, and preparing for the release of Pillowfight, her long whispered-about collaboration with legendary producer Dan The Automator. |
