Smoke Season Hot Coals Cold Souls EP Review

Smoke Season starts off their Hot Coals Cold Souls with Badlands, a chaotic and tempestuous effort that possesses the perfect blend of intensity and sly, sultry music. The presence of dual harmonies during this introductory effort establishes  Smoke Season as an act that has a number of tools in their repertoire. The Jack White-esque guitar lines present on this introductory salvo  and haunting melodies crafted by this two-part vocal assault provides listeners with the momentum that they require to finish Hot Coals Cold Souls strongly.smoke-season_hot-coals-cold-souls

Simmer Down is a pop-ready track that links together Matt & Kim, Ellie Goulding, and Tegan & Sara into an effort that links together New Wave, EDM, and rock into something that will have listeners on the dance floor. The dark, brooding sound that plays at the periphery during Simmer Down makes this track a dense and complex beast with considerable replay value. Opaque is a mélange of the singer-songwriter and indie traditions, with the vocals resting above the dreamy dynamic created by the guitars and the drums.

(Fools Gold) opens up with a very industrial / ambient instrumental arrangement that accurately captures the sheer magnitude of cityscapes. While only 100 seconds (or so) in length, it tells just as much of a story as the other tracks on this EP. Smoke Season end their Hot Coals Cold Souls EP in a strong way, creating something beautiful and ensuring that listeners are hungering for more of the band’s inimitable style.
