Teetering at the edge of soulful, cinematic pop songs and something decidedly more seductive and dark, Awake And AlertÂ’s undulating, pulsing soundscapes twist around front woman Maya Peart’s haunting vocals and fragile keyes. While she’s certainly the focal point on Devil In A Lambskin Suit — knowing exactly when to let her voice soar and when to let vulnerability creep in — the rest of the band provides a dramatic-yet-solid backbone with nods toward atmopsheric shoegaze, experimental jazz and driving rock. Produced by Bob Hoag (The Format, Limbeck, Dear and the Headlights), Awake And Alert have undoubtedly written one of this year’s most engaging and memorable records.
