Crash Romeo – Gave Me The Clap / 2008 Trustkill / 11 Tracks / http://www.crashromeo.com /

“Victim Liar” is a damn good song. The band is able to draw elements of Yellowcard, Blink 182, and even throw in a little bit of The Dangerous Summer and Amber Pacific to make a full sound. The pop-punk / rock./ emo blend that Crash Romeo put out on “Gave Me The Clap” has been done by bands before but has not been done in such a catchy way for a long time. The title track builds upon the styles and sounds that the band first brought to “Victim Liar”, but has a delightful bit of angularity present in the guitars on the track.

This further establishes Crash Romeo as an act that can come up with their own sound, while still coming forth with honest songs that will have individuals singing along for weeks, if not months, to come. The different time signatures that come forth during the chorus are what set the track off the most, showing that the act can really ratchet things up in the creation of a stellar track. “Honest Eyes” brings a little bit of Hole into the mix, but continues to vary up the guitar assault and reduce the possibility that individuals listening to “Gave Me The Clap” will be able to guess what the band will be doing next. While the track is not as immediately catchy as “Victim Liar” and “Gave Me The Clap”, the rising action that the vocals do during the chorus will have more than their fair share of converts. The guitars, doing much the same thing in the moments before the chorus, further link this track together into a cohesive entity.

“Maybe Lane” is another track that is cut from the same cloth as a “Victim Liar”, meaning that it is an uptempo type of track that will get individuals’ toes tapping and voices singing along. The vocals and guitars struggle for dominance during the track, finally coming forth with an agreement that puts them both in the red line for most of the track. Another solid track by Crash Romeo, “Maybe Lane” establishes “Gave Me The Clap” as one of the best emo/punk albums of the last few years. While the genre itself seems to have given ground up to emo/hardcore styles, such as those put forth by Alamance and From First To Last, Crash Romeo show that this style is far from dying. See them live, pick up this album, and hopefully they will put out a song or two in the months to come.
