Progressive metal comes in many shapes and sizes, but undoubtedly the genre’s top export out of Brazil is MindFlow. The Brazilian band will soon be performing throughout the U.S. in support of their upcoming album, Destructive Device.  The group (which includes singer Danilo Herbert, guitarist Rodrigo Hidalgo, bassist Ricardo Winandy, keyboardist Miguel Spada and drummer Rafael Pensado) manage to show off their instrumental virtuosity while never losing sight of composing memorable and highly melodic songs, which in recent times has become a rarity in the aforementioned genre.

Formed in 2003, the quintet built a massive following back home, on the strength of two hit releases, 2004’s Just the Two of Us…Me and Them and 2006’s Mind Over Body and it quickly became apparent that MindFlow is not your predictable rock band, as they’re open to trying new technological approaches that bring their fans into the world of MindFlow. Case in point, an ‘alternate reality game’ (ARG) that was tied in with their sophomore effort, which included an intense storyline that involves an imaginary serial killer. But it is on the upcoming CD Destructive Device, where it has all come together musically for MindFlow. Produced by Ben Grosse (Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Sevendust) and recorded and mixed in both Brazil and Los Angeles. The album is “packed with socially critical ideology” and “is a project boiling over with aggressive lyrics and themes.” The group’s sound has truly come to full realization on their third release, as their music is one of the more ‘cinematic sounding’ in rock.

As with their previous releases, Destructive Device will be supported with a full-on tour, which will no doubt be chock full of surprises.  The band will be playing 32 shows throughout the continent, starting in May and running through July, 2008 (including what is bound to be one of the breakthrough performances of this year’s edition of the Rocklahoma festival, on July 11th). Forget how you’ve heard prog metal up until now, MindFlow is poised to completely level the playing field with Destructive Device.
