Moneen – It All Started With A Red Stripe / 2008 Vagrant / http://www.moneen.com / http://www.vagrant.com /
Moneen said it all started with a red stripe. I have to disagree; it all started with a gray stripe (“Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now†was their first (and best) album). However, what did start with a red stripe was Moneen’s rapid rise to fame, and this documentary cum concert shows this rapid rise to the top.
This means that there is a documentary of sorts that provides information that far exceeds anything that would be present either on the band’s web site or liner notes, while the complete live concert (filmed in Moneen’s area of Toronto) provides individuals with what the band believes to be their biggest hits. While the act is not huge (brand name-wise) yet, the turnout at this concert and the level at which the concert is captures shows that the band has their presentation to the public down pat. This is especially amazing considering the concert occurred a year ago, and considering the amount of fans that have flocked to Moneen’s cause since then, a show now would likely double what was present here. For individuals that have stuck with the band through their career, the presentation of Moneen’s music videos makes this an essential purchase to complete one’s collection. The documentary, Alex Liu-s “The Start To This May Be The End to Another’, showcases the Moneen that individuals were familiar with in 2006, after they had released their “The Red Treeâ€. Other features on this DVD include some art that was created by the band, along with a video that had previously not been released – “The Song I Swore Never To Singâ€, and some webisodes that were shot in 2006 and 2007 that create further context to what the band was doing during this period and what individuals should tend to expect from the band in the future. I really cannot think of what else could conceivably be added to make this DVD any better; Vagrant has continued their streak and made something memorable and yet, even if individuals have all the constituent materials on this DVD, something that really needs to be picked up by anyone that feels that they are a fan of Moneen. Buy this and keep listening in for any new songs or albums by the band.
