Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs #30 / $2? / 28M / 445 ½ Randolph St, Meadville, PA 16335 / http://www.freewebs.com/50eggs /

Nobody Can Eat 50 Eggs is a zine that I always look forward to. The writing and art style of Steve Steiner (the focus behind the magazine) is fun and very distinctive. As I have said in previous reviews of this zine, Steve is VERY influenced by the sixties and seventies run of Mad Magazine. This is not to say that the work is derivative, but individuals that are familiar with Mad from that era will see much of the humor popping back up in Steiner’s writings. This issue seems to suffer through some growing pains. While Steiner is trying to make this zine go through as many issues as possible before ey shuts the blinds on the operation, it feels as if some of the pieces are not fully fleshed out. For example, the first Crocodile Man comic seems to need a second page to really get into gear, and the “Water Hole Bullys’ piece has a weak ending joke. It seems here as if Steiner gets into more of a groove, asnsubsequent pieces (“Warning Signs Your Cat is Possessed By Satan” and “Attention Deficit Monkey” bring the funny more often than the prior pieces. The art style is always fun and distinctive, and the humor hits on all cylinders for the majority of the zine. While “Dangers in the Park’ seems more to be an explanatory piece than a funny one, “The Bloody Affair” serves as a vital piece to forward the story of The Incomparable Colonel MacTagart. Keep an eye on Steiner and make sure to pick up subsequent issues.
