One-man act Matthew Erickson, who performs under the band name Toy Gun Cowboy, announced the band’s music will appear in new documentary about the downtown Santa Ana art and music scene titled Primer.

The tracks “99.9 % Of The Time” from Toy Gun Cowboy’s forthcoming full length Big Blue and “Big Box of Buttons” from the band’s Star…? Or No Star? EP will appear in the documentary.

Erickson explains he got involved with the documentary when he was contacted by the film’s producer Jeffrey Horn from Akorn Entertainment. “He had heard some of my music and thought it would be a good fit.” Erickson adds: “Primer was filmed in High Definition and what I have seen looks awesome, so I am very pleased to be part of the effort.”

“I am excited about having some of my music included in the new documentary “Primer” about the Downtown Santa Ana Art and Music Scene because it is such a cultural explosion going on there. It is a roughly 3 block area filled with art galleries, restaurants, and musicians, right in the heart of Orange County.”

Erickson explains the artwork for his forthcoming album “Big Blue” is a piece by Jophen Stein that he saw in the Scribble Theory Gallery in Downtown Santa Ana. Says Erickson: “The instant I saw the painting I thought that it would perfectly convey the tone of the album. I like going down there because there is inspiration bubbling around every corner.”

The man behind Toy Gun Cowboy goes on to say that one of the interesting things that happens at the gallery in Downtown Santa Ana is that every once in a while individual drummers and percussionists will form a big group of about 40 musicians and start drumming away on congas, bongos, snares, shakers, tambourines. The end result is a unique formation of rhythms, polyrhythms and syncopations with everyone improvising and playing off of each other.

Erickson will release his new album Big Blue under the moniker Toy Gun Cowboy on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 on Gutter Groove Records.
