Mean Girls (Blu-Ray)

The transfer over the Blu-Ray does provide purchasers with a significantly sharper picture and audio quality over the standard DVD release. What was originally just seen as a revamp of Heathers works on its own 5 years after the original version was released. The TrueHD version of the audio makes for a lush soundscape of voices, ambient noise, and music, at a level that would please even those individuals that…

Strange Wilderness (Blu-Ray)

Strange Wilderness was released last year, and Paramount has taken the plunge and has tapped it as another title to be transferred to Blu-Ray. The film itself was reviewed here at https://neufutur.com/?p=3402 , and provides a better description of the plot than will be discussed here. Essentially, Strange Wilderness focuses around a nature show that is looking to bump their ratings after a steady decline by capturing Bigfoot. The Blu-Ray…

The Boils – From The Bleachers (CD)

“Into the Enemy” has a tremendous amount of catchiness imbued on the track by the all-in chorus and chunky, Matt Freeman bass lines on the track. The track does the most benefit in introducing listeners to The Boils, and ties together the disparate pieces of the act into something more cohesive. The sheer amount of sub-minute tracks on “From The Bleachers” show The Boils as a band that can say…

Peanuts: Snoopy’s Reunion (DVD)

It is nice to see that a number of the Peanuts specials are making it to a remastered format on DVD, rather than having to be traded around different collectors until the video quality permanently degrades. Warner Brothers has done a bang-up job here coming forth with a clear and crisp rendition of this Peanuts special, while going and ensuring that there are more than enough in the way of…

The IT Crowd – Season One (DVD)

If you’ve yet to hear about the British sitcom The IT Crowd, just wait about a year. It’s only a matter of time before one of the networks here snatches up the rights to this series and tries to repurpose it for American audiences, only to cancel it after two episodes (NBC had originally planned to run it last year, but the show has yet to air).

The Boggs – Forts Unmixed Sampler (CD)

Even when one considers that these tracks are all not mixed or mastered, the beauty that is The Boggs comes through in excellent form. A clacking, noisy track mimics stomping, while the soulful singing strewn throughout really adds a touch of softness to what is a very stark and rough type of track. In a sense, The Boggs on this track (‘Forts” enact their own form of comparative politics, as…

WONDERLICK EXPLORES THE INTERSECTION OF ART AND COMMERCE ON NEW RELEASE

The California-based group Wonderlick will be releasing their sophomore full-length, “Topless At The Arco Arena,” on July 7, 2009 via Missing Piece/Rock Ridge Music. Re-release of Blind Fury (ex-Satan) album out in April

Blind Fury emerged on the metal scene soon after the release of Satan’s “Court In The Act”. This wasn’t a mere coincidence – Blind Fury WAS in fact Satan, or to be more precise – Satan’s new incarnation. Under that name the group recorded only one album – “Out of Reach” (1985) – but it was enough to make Blind Fury a true metal icon! The album was rooted in…

Life & Times – Tragic Boogie (Arena Rock) (CD)

Proving loud and beautiful can coexist, Missouri’s Life & Times has been able to live up to the hype surrounding their 2003 EP. The trio, including former Shiner founder Allen Epley, manage to sound a lot bigger than just three guys. Tragic Boogie, the group’s latest full length, though not perfect, is still a solid step in the right direction. With its swirling guitars and light industrial feel (Think My…

Body Rockers – S/T (CD)

“Handel On Your Face” seems to try to draw some influence from the “Switched On Bach” of Walter/Wendy Carlos, but really does not connect with listeners as well as it should. Perhaps it is the extended opening (modified off of classical forms) that does it, but the Body Rockers really get back into the game with the commercially sampled “I Like The Way”. “I Like The Way” has the same…

Could you get hooked on “Zodiac Dust?” Loop 2.4.3 to release landmark album of rhythmic, orchestral experimentation hinting at Steve Reich.

“Reinvents percussion…” – Fresh Air, NPR Zodiac Dust — the name sounds like an addictive new substance that all the kids are taking. Perhaps it soon will be. For now, Zodiac Dust is a fittingly daze-inducing and awe-inspiring work of musical experimentation by Brooklyn duo Loop 2.4.3 that merges myriad elements of classical, jazz, rock and many other world musics. Loop 2.4.3 employs the gamut of percussion instruments, from marimba…

Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka (70 Proof)

A few weeks back Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka made its way into the office. At first I wasn’t too interested in the idea. Being “southern”, I had drunk tea from dawn to dusk for several years and would never be able to compare anything to the tea from my childhood. Needless my standards were set very high.
