You are 3 nights into a 2-week trip to Lisbon, and the person you talked to in the hostel lounge has suggested dinner on Friday. You have 11 days left and a return ticket that cannot be changed. In Portugal, the law places no restriction on what 2 consenting adults do after that dinner, and several popular destinations are far stricter.
Survey Figures on Travel Romance
In January 2025, a hotel group commissioned a survey of 1,000 adults in Germany about romance on holiday. Of the respondents, 26.2% said they had fallen in love while traveling. Among that group, 45.8% described the result as a shorter fling and 16.4% said it became a long-term relationship. Almost a quarter, 24.8%, said they met their life partner that way, and 39.8% of all respondents said falling in love is easier while traveling.
The same survey found that 71.8% of those who fell in love felt chemistry within a few days. Beach holidays accounted for 46.2% of the romances and city trips for 21.8%. The sample was German, and a company that sells hotel beds paid for it, so the figures describe one market and deserve some caution.
Meeting People on a Solo Trip
A July 2025 survey of 3,334 solo travelers by a hostel booking company found that 71% were actively looking to meet people, and only 3.7% of those who were looking met nobody at all. The share who said they wanted to meet new people rose from 43% in 2024 to 58% in 2025, and 52% said they stayed in touch with people they met on the road. Women made up 60% of the respondents, and 66% were aged 18 to 30. That is a young and mostly female group, and its figures may not apply to business trips or resort stays.
In the German survey, 25.6% met their holiday romance in the common areas of their accommodation, and 20.6% met the person on the day they arrived. Shared kitchens and walking tours put strangers in the same room with staff and other guests nearby, which is a better starting point than a first meeting in an empty apartment.
Romance After the Return Flight
A romance that starts on a trip has to become something specific once one person flies home. Some pairs keep it as a memory, while others try long distance or, less often, relocate.
A traveler who meets an older, settled partner may need to decide early if they want a sugar daddy or a boyfriend, since each relationship sets different terms for contact and time together after the trip.
Local Laws on Sex and Affection
Indonesia’s revised criminal code took effect on January 2, 2026. It makes sex outside marriage punishable by up to 1 year in prison and cohabitation by up to 6 months. Prosecution requires a complaint from a spouse, parent, or child of the accused, and hotel staff and other third parties cannot file one. The government has said the law will not target tourists, although the text applies to foreigners as well as citizens.
The United Arab Emirates restricts public displays of affection. Holding hands is generally tolerated, while kissing in public can lead to fines or deportation. In one case, a British couple who kissed in a restaurant lost a jail appeal in Dubai and faced a month in prison followed by deportation. During Ramadan, the rules on daytime public behavior are stricter.
Same-sex dating has further legal risk. The Human Dignity Trust, a legal charity, counts 66 jurisdictions that criminalize private, consensual same-sex activity, and about 42 countries criminalize sex between women. A gay or lesbian traveler dating abroad needs that list before booking, since a date that is routine at home can lead to arrest in some of those countries.
In Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates, these laws govern where a date can end and how 2 people behave in a restaurant or a taxi. A traveler should read the host country’s rules before the trip and assume they apply in full.
Health Risks in Casual Travel Sex
A 2010 systematic review and meta-analysis in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases pooled studies of travelers and found that 20.4% reported casual sex during foreign travel. Of those, 49.4% had unprotected intercourse. The review linked casual sex abroad to a threefold higher risk of sexually transmitted infection.
Its authors also named the factors most associated with casual sex during travel. They included younger age, male sex, single status, traveling alone, and longer trips. A single adult on a solo trip matches 2 of those factors before leaving home. Packing condoms from home removes the need to find them in a pharmacy with an unfamiliar language on the label, and a sexual health check after the trip is routine for anyone who had a new partner.
Methanol Risk on First Dates
Many first dates abroad start with a drink, and adulterated alcohol is a documented risk in several destinations. In October 2025, the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office added 8 countries to its methanol poisoning warnings, including Japan, Mexico, and Peru. By July 2026, 29 destinations had methanol poisoning warnings on UK government travel advice. The government states that as little as 30ml, about a single shot, can be fatal to an adult.
In November 2024, 6 travelers died of methanol poisoning after drinking contaminated spirits in Vang Vieng, Laos. UK guidance lists spirit-based drinks, especially shots and drinks served in buckets or jugs, as the higher-risk orders, and it names branded beer, cider, wine, and sealed premixed drinks as safer. On a first date, that means ordering from a sealed bottle or can at a licensed venue and replacing any drink left unattended. The early signs of methanol poisoning, according to the same guidance, include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and confusion, and vision problems can appear 12 to 48 hours after drinking. Anyone with those symptoms after a night out needs a hospital, with the date or a friend told where they went.
Costs of an Unplanned Trip Romance
An arrest is the outcome of an unprepared date abroad that a traveler’s own government can do least about. The US State Department says it cannot get citizens released from foreign jails. Consular officers can visit and supply a list of local lawyers, but they cannot give legal advice or pay legal fees. Anyone charged under a local law on sex or affection faces that court system with a lawyer found from a list. An hour spent reading the host country’s laws before departure costs far less, and the dinner on Friday can still go ahead in a public restaurant with a sealed drink on the table.
I am a proud University of Wisconsin-Madison (BA, Political Science) alumni and “pop” culture addict. My interests include music, films, books (including comics) and vintage stereo equipment. My passion for all forms of entertainment from mainstream to obscure takes up too much room. In addition to skateboarding and Great Lakes surfing, I love good food and micro brews of all types.
