Lulling listeners into a false sense of security with the fairly calm opening to their first track on “Harpoon”, Philadelphia’s Snack Truck come forth with a musical assault that vacillates between FBTMOF and your typical indie-rock band. The mastering of “Harpoon” offers a clean slate for the band; the guitars are clean, being distorted just enough to make for a nice sound but not enough to crowd out the…
Proving that two Los Angelenos in their early 20s can embrace a love for the Carter Family and a DIY punk ethos, and encapsulate an old timey era with decidedly forward looking and somehow timeless songs, The Driftwood Singers announce a string of summer tour dates. Weaving worn guitars, Autoharp, banjo, fiddle, mandolin and two hauntingly powerful voices, Pearl Charles and Kris Hutson create tales of strength and heartbreak on…
The already intense roster for the forthcoming first installment of The Power Of The Riff East — recently announced to take place on September 1st and 2nd in Brooklyn — has this week been finalized. COFFINWORM and DOUBLE NEGATIVE have both joined the lineup for day two’s festivities, while almighty New York Hardcore kingpins AGNOSTIC FRONT will join the headlining acts for day one, playing an amazing set of…
Today the sound slingers at BrooklynVegan are streaming Side A of Life, the debut LP from subsonic psychedelic doom duo TAURUS. The band features Stevie Floyd of Dark Castle and Ashley Spungin, formerly of Purple Rhinestone Eagle. Together they’ve crafted one menacing, 35-minute movement which Sea of Tranquility fittingly dubbed “a noisy, feedback drenched journey into your worst nightmare.” Officially released yesterday (July 5) on CD, LP and limited boxset,…
“Patty Hearst Syndrome” is one of the earliest tracks on Smoke or Fire’s “This Sinking Ship”, and this song makes me think of a more poppy blend of Strike Anywhere and Rise Against. This means that there is a punk type of tempo and bouncy beat, while there is a more emotional set of vocals that at times achieve the register of bands like Yellowcard. Even with a new…
Louisiana’s hard rock quartet, 12 Stones, will kick off the first leg of its headlining “Beneath The Scars” summer 2012 tour tonight in Merriam, Kan., with Blameshift, Digital Summer and Throwing Gravity in support. All I have to say about this disc is wow. Imagine Queens of the Stone Age with a little harder sound, and you have a vague idea of what Smoke Follows Beauty sounds like. While the disc is continually plagued by weak-sounding vocals, the instrumentation is simply amazing. In fact, as I continued listening to the disc, I found it easier and easier to tune out the vocals and just…
“Channel Orange, his beautiful first full-length studio album, will be released this month, and it’s rife with the sting of unrequited love, both on the receiving and inflicting ends. Mr. Ocean, 24, is an extremely unflashy songwriter, avoiding big proclamations and broad brush strokes, instead leaning on conversational gambits and the power of detail. He makes warm, cloudy soul with echoes of Stevie Wonder, Prince and Pharrell Williams…” – The…

This time the band decided to release a 10″ vinyl entitled A Saunter Through The Shroud. The EP will be produced and engineered by Dave Downham (who was also at the helm of their 2011 Topshelf debut, Mountain Smashers) at Familyre Studios in New Jersey, where such artists as mewithoutYou and Sufjan Stevens have recently recorded. Safely guarded behind four pairs of glasses and an arsenal of…
Death metal behemoths SIX FEET UNDER recently returned home from the victorious 18 Nights Of Blood Tour. The short but ravaging trek marked the first live outing featuring newly recruited rhythm guitarist Ola Englund as well as bassist Jeff Hughell [ex-Brain Drill, ex-Vile] and systematically bludgeoned all in its path. Comments vocalist Chris Barnes: “Had a great time on the 18 Nights Of Blood Tour with Dying Fetus and Revocation!…
Many viewers are familiar with the bald eagle, but I believe that few outside of those that have actively studied the area will be familiar with the harpy eagles. These eagles are some of the most vicious birds currently in existence, with a huge wingspan (6 feet) and claws that rival even a black bear’s in size. Fergus Beeley is a hell of a documentarian, setting eirself (and crew) down…
Rake is a tremendously hilarious show; what House did for medical dramas, Rake has done for law shows. Richard Roxburgh (Moulin Rouge) is Cleaver Greene, a judge that straddles the line between genius and insane. The rapport that ey has with the different elements of the city showcases that ey knows what is best for the area. Where Greene is rough around the edges, ey truly has a heart of…

Dinner is served… Baton Rouge-based lords of brutal death metal, SUTURE, are back with a vengeance. After years of dormancy,…
While Christian Bale is the name in The Flowers of War, I feel that the cast add considerably to the gravity of the film. For those that missed its original theatrical engagement, The Flowers of War is a historical drama set in mid-thirties Nanjing (China). Focusing on the atrocities committed during the second Sino-Japanese war, the film follows a rag-tag group of individuals that are struggling to stay alive.…
