Their debut single, “Dark Into Light” will be released on July 19 on ESL with their LP Celestial Electric to follow on Sept. 6. AM & Shawn Lee’s fortuitous cyberspace partnership began generating advance buzz several months ago when they previewed their new songs live at the SXSW Music and Media Conference in March 2011. The…

Ghostly’s Shigeto Remixes Dennis Coffey

The city of Detroit was heavily represented on Dennis Coffey’s latest album in the form of guest appearances from Mayer Hawthorne, Mick Collins of The Dirtbombs, Rachel Nagy of The Detroit Cobras, and more. An equally vibrant array of Motor City talent from the rich electronic community will be showcased on a forthcoming collection of remixes of tracks from the album. For now, check out a radical re-interpretation from beat…

EXCRUCIATOR ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM RELEASE DATE

EXCRUCIATOR was formed in early 2008 when friends Chris Birkle and Josh Kay, both bored with the overdone nu-core sounds dominating the Portland metal scene, proposed the idea of starting a band that brought back the energy of the earliest days of death metal as it evolved from the ashes of thrash. The two convinced the destroyer of strings, Craig Bridenbeck, to join on bass and were complete shortly thereafter…

Bang Olufsen Earset 3i (Headphones / Headset)

I come from a period in which headphones had to be large to be good in quality. We received the new headphones from Bang Olufsen, the Earset 3i, for review a few days ago and I was a little skeptical. However, these headphones have a tremendous amount of functionality and should be seen as must-buy for anyone that is in the market for a new pair. There are a number…

Roses Are Red – What Became of Me (CD)

Roses Are Red have been around for a few years; I remember having a copy of their last album in my closet for months. This is the band’s return to the big time. The disc opens up with “These Days”, which is a track that while having a catchy melody at points does not have quite the raw energy of a song like “Failing”. “Failing” has very confident guitar riffs…

NEUROSIS: Classic Sovereign EP To See Official Neurot Recordings Reissue

For the last 26 years, NEUROSIS have tapped into the elusive wellspring where resonance and dissonance collude, circling emotional poles where nothing is withheld, where the psyche screams for answers to Earth’s ancient mysteries Following the recent reissues of some of NEUROSIS’ most seminal groundbreaking earlier albums — Souls At Zero and Enemy Of The Sun — Neurot Recordings are now prepared to unveil the details on the next installment…

Rose Kemp – A Hand Full of Hurricanes (CD)

Rose Kemp starts off “A Hand Full of Hurricanes” with the quiet track “Little One”. The track shows that Kemp has not settled in completely, and it is not the strongest opening I have ever heard. For a proper introduction, one has to listen in to the second track, “Violence”. The most interesting thing about “Violence” is the bouncing back and forth between quieter and louder genres. However, there seems…

Primal Scream – Screamadelica Live (Blu-Ray)

Primal Scream is a band that has never gotten the adoration in the United States that they have around the rest of the world. While they have flirted briefly with fame here (2006’s Country Girl is the one track that I can call to mind), the band has continually been making music since 1982. Eagle Vision has placed their Screamdelica Live release onto Blu-Ray, placing a tremendous amount of additional…

THE VACCINES ANNOUNCE FIRST US HEADLINING TOUR THIS FALL

The Vaccines will bring their highly electric, guitar- rock anthems to fans with their first show on September 8th in Seattle, WA and ending a 14…

Roma 79 – The Great Dying (CD)

Roma 79 is a hard band to get into, especially since “Heads Down” is such an ugly track. This is not to say that the track is poorly-conceived or recorded, but rather that the track feels a little off. The band is not working together as cohesively ass they could be, with the drum-beats of Aaron really sticking out like a sore thumb. There seems to be a little better…

Blindside – With Shivering Hearts We Wait (CD)

It has been a pretty long time since Blindside has cut an album. However, in the four years since they released their last effort, they have done a tremendous job in tightening up their sound and crafting a compelling album. While it is true that the band has been crafting music for nearly twenty years, I feel that there is a freshness to the tracks on “With Shivering Hearts We…

Of course, seeing as the band loves to party on the road, they’re heading right back out in July and August with Ramming Speed. The tour gives east coasters a killer opportunity to catch two of the best up-and-coming rock/thrash bands in intimate, party-friendly…

New Nordic Mulberry Zuccarin

Zuccarin is a product that is made from Japanese Mulberry leaves, and New Nordic claims that the product will go and balance out an individual’s sugar. The logic behind this product is that the leaves hold a large amount of DNJ, which stops an individual’s absorption of sugar into glucose. By doing this, Zuccarin will ensure that one’s sugar does not get too high, no matter what sort of food…

Gerald Wilson Orchestra – Legacy (CD)

Jazz sits at the juncture between classical and current. Gerald Wilson explores this break by simultaneously working at these two poles. What results is a truly fitting experiment on eirself; listeners will get whom Gerald Wilson is and what influences eir quite nicely. At 92, there is no loss in eir step or sharpness – each of the twelve tracks on “Legacy” are impressive collages of musical interactions that will…

Sachal Vasandani – Hi-Fly (CD)

This is the third album that Vasandani has released; this singer has been garnering strong reviews from all sides of the jazz community since 2007. Hi-Fly showcases a singer that can power through traditional jazz tracks and experiment at length. What results is one of the most unique albums that we’ve been able to review, while still showcasing eir skill at every turn. Hi-Fly starts out with “The Very Thought…

Paul Simon – There Goes Rhymin’ Simon / Still Crazy After All These Years / Live Rhymin’ (CD)

It was late last year when these reissues were first mentioned, and I immediately became excited. This is due to the fact that Sony Legacy always attempts to dig deep with their reissues, coming out with different versions of tracks (demo, live, mono), crazy rare efforts, and a cleaning up of the sounds that originally impacted listeners all those years ago. Sony Legacy is one of the few companies that…

Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal (80 Proof)

As our alcohol review section has increased in the last few years, we have gotten the opportunity to review some impressive spirits. While we have been able to taste spirits on the long side of $100/bottle, I feel that the $50 per bottle cost of Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal represents one of the world’s best values. The spirit is considerably different than the VSOP, and represents a completely unique…

Talking Baseball: New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox (DVD)

A great amount of what ESPN does is simply too short to act as anything but a brief introduction to the topic at hand. In terms of baseball’s 162-game season (and lengthy yearly history), what they provide is simply not enough. There is a new series out by Ed Rendell that looks to delve the depths of baseball, for each of the league’s storied franchises. The great thing about the…
