Persian Poets, Environmental Devastation, and Electronic Music: Green Memories is an Ambient Voice of the Earth

Almost a century ago, after a thousand years of Persian poetry, there was a major shift. It paralleled a seemingly global movement in which older artistic languages were transformed. In the West, this transformation can be seen in art (Kandinsky), music (Schoenberg), and literature (James Joyce). It happened in other parts for the world. In Persian poetry, maybe it was a cultural mutation, a literary development, or a seemingly abrupt…

Trash Toxic Tampons

Wow. This is by far the most informative zine I’ve ever read about tampons, and it is a eighth sized, 16 page read. So it is very short. The writers of this zine make sure to put the pros and cons associated with tampons, pads, and the natural and organic alternatives. This zine is incredibly short, but it contains such a wealth of information. While it does contain a lot…

Glenn Beck: Unelectable (DVD)

Most viewers of Unelectable will know Glenn Beck as being one of the only conservative forces on CNN Headline News, but chances are good that they do not know that Beck conducts a one-person stage show. This stage show is what is ultimately captured on ”Unelectable”, and this DVD is integral to understand the funny side of Beck. The stage show is largely stand-up based, pointing out foibles in political…

Brookside @ The Gathering Grounds, August 26th, 2004

I’ve missed Brookside once before due to the ending of my Junior year of college. I was still debating seeing them their second time here in Greencastle, but really decided to go after one of my friends wanted to do something with me. After getting into the town square, I was greeted by the bassist of The Goodlife, and I handed out some of the compilation CDs to individuals who…

The Transmitter #1

This zine, from New Zealand, is about the best resource for making a zine in the smallest amount of pages that I have ever seen. Sure, some other zines have more content and ideas on how to make magazines, but for the cost (free) and the page count (16 eighth pages) the value is just immeasurable. In fact, one entire side is devoted to lists, including a listing of the…

Little Fish (Cast Recording) (CD)

While the original engagement of Little Fish only ran for a little over three weeks (February 15th to March 9th, 2003), the impact that Michael John LaChiusa’s music had on all lucky enough to familiarize themselves with it cannot be understated. This was first seen in the musical’s second life, where it enjoyed over a month of performances in 2007 at The Blank Theatre (Los Angeles). The musical’s cast recording,…

Hal Ketchum – Father Time (CD)

“Father Time” is Ketchum’s tenth studio album, and it represents a perfect example as to where Ketchum currently is in eir musical development, and what really is left for eir to conquer with the next ten or so albums. The first track on “Father Time”, “Invisible” is a perfect introduction to 2008’s Ketchum, no matter if the individual listening in is familiar with Ketchum’s previous recording. “Invisible” skillfully blends trends…

Legendary songwriter Vic Chesnutt teams with Elephant 6 psychsters Elf Power for a daunting sum of a record recalling the sounds of John Cale, Lou Reed and Nick Lowe

A tuneful collision of Athens institutions finds fruition this fall when Orange Twin releases Vic Chesnutt’s collaboration with Elephant 6 psychsters Elf Power, Dark Developments. As intriguing as this combination may seem for hardcore fans of either act, the final sonic results reveal a daunting sum much greater than even the involvement of such esteemed parts would imply. The Elves’ lived-in dexterity as a live band goads Vic’s vocal delivery…

The Evens – 06/19/2004 @ AMC, Bowling Green, Ohio

After kicking out the hecklers that were bothering them during sound check, The Evens (Ian Mackaye and Amy Farina) played an amazing set that was reminiscent of early nineties alternative music. It also included hints of mid-to-late nineties goth music. There is no kidding about it; Ian is one of the most talented musicians in the current period to pick up a guitar. This is not to say that Amy…

Trans(in)formation #1

Kelly’s previous zine, Do As I Say, Not As I Do, was one of the most memorable zines that I had the pleasure to read. This time, Kelly moves away from the personal and creates a resource for all transgendered individuals and people that are interested in the subject. Even though it was taken largely from the Gender Terminology List of T. Aaron Hands, the opening subject defining different terms…
