Great Northern (Solon Bixler, Rachel Stolte) released their atmospheric and melodic debut album, ‘Trading Twilight For Daylight’ in 2007. With its catchy hooks, lush keys and breathy vocals, it was received warmly and created a solid buzz – the band’s music was also featured in commercials and played on an A-list of radio stations, including KDLD, KCRW, KNRK, WEQK, WWCD, KEXP and Indie 103, plus FM giant KROQ and a…
There is no denying that one can tell exactly how Michael Lee Austin is going to sound after looking at the front cover of eir CD “Labor Painsâ€. The disc starts off with the title track, a honky-tonk type of song that will get individuals into lines, all ready for dancing in just the shortest bit of time. Austin’s vocals are easily the equivalent of a Travis Tritt or an…

Burbank, CA- Australian singer-songwriter Missy Higgins will embark on a new headlining tour in 2009 with openers Justin Nozuka and Lenka, playing bigger venues to accommodate her growing success in the U.S., in support of her current album On A Clear Night. Higgins has spent the past year on the road with such artists as Ben Folds and Indigo Girls, performing her timeless, intimate songs and winning over American audiences…
Very roughly recorded album by this 3 piece band. This punk music is inherently catchy and the recording only helps endear this band to its audience. The guitars and bass are the high part of the album, with the vocals also playing a large part. Atomic Shelters are very adapt at playing different styles of music and add their own special flair to each song. As I am a bass…
Bob Mould is arguably one of the most influential musicians of the alternative rock era, first for his early work with post-punk rabble-rousers Husker Du, followed by the college-rock-defining pop of Sugar and finally for his solo albums, notably his first, Workbook, which quieted Mould’s previous ire to reveal his fine songwriting in a new light and allowed an introspective glimpse into the inner workings of an evolving artist. anfnewsacctwww.neufutur.com
Pitchfork Media : “In many ways, Jeremy Jay appears to be a man out of time. Sporting a mop-top and coarse wool blazer, Jay draws on such esoteric yet melody-minded songwriters of the past as Harry Nilsson and Bill Fay (with a little bit of post-punk disaffection thrown in for good measure). And while he’s no throwback act, it’s not hard to imagine a tune of his gracing the same…
On April 4th 2009, The Numero Group’s Eccentric Soul Revue will make its debut at Chicago’s Park West Theater. And while Syl Johnson, the Notations, and Nate Evans perform regularly around the world, Renaldo Domino, the Kaldirons, and the Final Solution haven’t been on stage in over 30 years. In true revue fashion, a stalwart backing band, The Uptown Sound, will take the stage to curtain the entire performance, expanding…

ABPK’s grave sound is no doubt caused by the brooding nature of their sound, best described as a mixture of Husker Du and Marilyn Manson. When I say best describe, what I really mean are the two bands that contribute to ABPK’s sound but are not indicative in any large way to their sound. The band is just too diverse to have any single influence predominate, and depending on their…

With their fifth full-length album, the Portland-based quintet of Colin Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query and John Moen solidifies its standing as one of the most innovative creative forces in music today. In an age…
Honestly, this is the first time that I’ve ever been lucky enough to hear Atom and his Package, although he has came highly recommended for the last 4 or 5 years. With this album, Atom’s newest, pop just flows out of the radio, at times sounding like Weird Al, other times They Might Be Giants, and about 50 different synthesizer groups that I neither have the time nor the space…
Chainsaw, one of the best bands on Polish melodic thrash metal scene, returns with a brand new album entitled “Evilutionâ€. The new LP is a concept album due to the lyrical content, written by a native Scotsman, Alex Summers. It consists of 10 rather dark and gruesome tales – Celtic legends telling stories of half-human and half-animal creatures, paranormal activities, supernatural powers and the evolution of evil and magic that…
Venice is Sinking plays orchestral pop, Americana, slowcore, or space rock, depending on whom you ask. Founded in Athens, GA in 2003, this five-piece outfit eschews facile categorization. Its sound is familiar but hard to pin down, rooted in cinematic arrangements, subtle genre tweaks, and clear, ringing harmonies. The band’s 2006 debut LP, Sorry About The Flowers, gained national attention for the crystalline male/female vocals of singers Daniel Lawson and…
The Atari Star’s vocalist, Marc, sounds as if Dexter Holland and Neil Young had a child. The mastering on “Prayer + Pretend†is similar. There is tremendous fury laced throughout this disc, but the oppressive mastering found on this disc holds the band from achieving much more. The iconic guitar lines on a track like “Starve a Fever†jerks the listener around, only moving into an early-nineties brand of distortion…

Why Hartford, Connecticut’s CABLE are not a household name—at least in households familiar with Unsane and Quicksand—is a mystery that may never be solved. The veteran noisy rockers worked the scene for a dozen years, releasing records on labels such as Hydra Head, Translation Loss, Doghouse and touring alongside bands like Isis and 5ive, before calling it quits in 2006. anfnewsacctwww.neufutur.com
Asva has fifty minutes of music split up amongst four tracks. This allows for the band to set their own pace in creating a very distinctive sound. For a while during “Kill the Dog…â€, I was expecting a whole-scale move to a Misfits-like slam against the wall (think “Forbidden Zoneâ€). The music is well-done, if not a little plodding, with a definite structure in place to continue to drag listeners…
