Fly Gypsy is back at it with their newest track, “Block Rockin’ (Remix),” off of their latest project, The Vodka & Rum Mixtape. The MC/producer duo blend a wide variety of genres and lyricists to create an infectiously head nodding track, incorporating a sample from big beat legends, The Chemical Brothers, a verse from Lauryn Hill, taken from her track “Lost Ones,” and a verse from Busta Rhymes, taken from…
For BLACK GOLD, the past year has been quite a busy one. In addition to releasing RUSH–hailed by SPIN as “breathlessly experimental” with “sweeping orchestral rock†and also praised by People, URB.COM, MetroMix, Big Shot and more–the duo made high-profile appearances at All Points West and SXSW. They also toured throughout the U.S. and shared the stage with the likes of Scissor Sisters, The Hold Steady, Panic at the Disco…
While different styles dominate during the first track of “Naked on the Black Floorâ€, most notably electronic-metal in the vein of Fear Factory and the nu-metal push of bands like Disturbed, what comes forth much more clearly on the disc is a more classic style that taps bands like Queensryche. The blend of styles is essentially what Event Horizon is; where “Everything that begins must end†begins the disc and…

Coming through with a very post-hardcore sound, mixing elements of Coldplay, Pink Floyd, the Weakerthans, and the entire early-1990s indie rock movement. Matt’s voice is quirky and at times inconsistent with the style of music that Evening plays. While the promo sheet for this release is littered with the praise of in-house writers proclaiming the originality of Evening, I really tend to find this disc par for the course in…
While his recently released album, So Much To Say, is steadily building buzz and gaining accolades from fans and critics alike, singer, writer, and producer Rob Murat felt this the perfect opportunity to speak directly with fans and give some love back for all their continued support. To do just that, Rob recently took a stroll through his home streets of New York City to let fans get to better…
Rock is just tastier when it’s made down south. Just ask everyone that’s seen Green River Ordinance sizzle at each and every show that they’ve played this past year in support of their Virgin Records debut, Out Of My Hands. If you haven’t caught the pop rock phenomenon yet, you’ll have a chance to see them this fall with One Tree Hill star Kate Voegele. Hot off highly successful runs…
Jackson, Mississippi native Dent May grew up singing in local church groups, acting in school plays, and performing at nursing home gigs with a recorder choir. In high school, he wrote synthy power-pop with his band The Rockwells while recording erotically charged novelty tracks with friends on the side. After three unsuccessful semesters at NYU’s film school, May moved to North Mississippi where he helped found the Cats Purring arts…
The first track on the disc, “A Cross + A Girl Named Blessed†mixes together Alien Ant Farm, Tool and Dashboard Confessional in some unholy alliance that really shows an incredible amount of emotive force even if the instrumentation has a lock on the low end of things. “Stop + Say You Love Me†even furthers the Tool comparison further, seemingly taken line for line out of the Aenima album.…

On “Rider.Shadow.Wolf.,” Molina’s tired rider, just having battled the desert, now meets the eternity of the ocean. The track is the standout among the plethora of cuts recorded during the same productive session that gave us the band’s most recent longplayer, Josephine. Also found on the limited 7″ is a stripped-down, early take of “Josephine.” This particular recording of “Josephine” was laid down just after the song’s inception, during the…
Evaline plays a brand of emo music but their rub is something that is completely different from anything else that the mass of emo bands are doing. The arrangements present during “Postpartum Modesty†are miles beyond anything else that emo acts are typically known for. When the band starts off their EP with “La De Daâ€, the result is something so much more intense and full-bodied than the average emo…
On the heels of a new EP and recent North American tour, Austin group The Octopus Project are returning to the studio to record their next full-length. To tide fans over in the meantime, the band’s first two albums have been reissued on vinyl and are available in stores now. The band’s haunting debut, Identification Parade, was originally issued by Peek-A-Boo Records in 2002, and deftly combines the experimentation of…
The man behind the mask of Michael Myers from box office horror films Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN (2007) and H2 (2009), as well as other block buster hits such as X-MEN and TROY, is taking matters into his own hands. Tyler Mane has announced the formation of his new production company, Mane Entertainment, LLC and plans for their first film, a horror-thriller titled PENANCE LANE. “Indie films are taking a beatingâ€,…
“I’ve Got A Life†is a track that is destined to be played for gay dance clubs all through the country, as the campy vocal stylings on the track really tend to hearken back to the disco period. “Love Is A Stranger†brings listeners a few years later, as the hokey electronics played during the track really dates the track in a good way. The song feels as if it…
