The Eames Era plays a catchy brand of pop-infused rock that is catchy as all get out starting with “Little Brother†. The track shows The Eames Era as an act that is most comfortable in this earlier genre, while the band still makes the songs salient for the current audience. The band is able to craft shorter songs that make big impressions on anyone listening in. There may not…

Wildlife, Headlights’ poignant third album, stems from particularly troubled beginnings. “It was a very difficult record,” relates guitarist and songwriter Tristan Wraight. While Wraight, fellow songwriter and keyboardist Erin Fein, and drummer Brett Sanderson have been touring and recording since 2004, this year found the band as a five piece for the first time with the addition of bassist Nick Sanborn and, temporarily, guitarist John Owen. Group dynamics are a…
“Go To Sleep†is not surprisingly a track that is sedate, a perfect bit of dream-pop that has influences including The Cranberries. “Got Your Note†is another of the same style of tracks but really succeeds in involving a slightly different sound as before with a stop-start sound and activist drums. Each of the tracks on “Double Dutch†is tenderly constructed with instrumentation that only bolster Ashlin’s already smooth vocals.…
“We have waited a while…still it’ll take us some time” begins “Meet and Greet.” Vocal harmonies ring out to the pulsing beat of a delayed floor tom. A guitar wakes up the reeds. The subtle organic percussion of handclaps punctuates the amplified air, the music becoming a distinct human synthesis. This is a pop song. This is Slaraffenland. Based in Denmark, they embrace the art of shape, of space, and…
Santa Rosa, CA’s LITANY FOR THE WHALE are as hard to categorize as their cryptic, vaguely unsettling moniker may suggest. Combining the epic, doomy hardcore of Cursed with the crusty sensibilities of Kylesa, their expansive, noisy sound borrows as much from the Jesus Lizard as it does Battlefields. The band recently completed the recording of their debut album Dolores at Prairie Sun Studios (The Melvins) and features artwork by Chris…

Mark Lanegan is in sonorous, imperious voice†— MOJO, 4/5 stars “Mark Lanegan reprises his role as a latter day Johnny Cash, while fellow alt-rock alumni Jason Pierce, Mike Patton and Richard Hawley make fleeting cameos. The result could be the soundtrack to the greatest spaghetti western never made.†— Q, 4/5 stars “a tumultuous amalgamation of zoned-out jazz lines, wistful soul vocals, moody strings,…
