Michael Buble – Call Me Irresponsible / 2007 Reprise / 14 Tracks / http://www.michaelbuble.com / http://www.repriserecords.com / Reviewed 17 June 2007

Michael Buble is all the rage in the right circles, but is not among the key demographics that would turn this very successful artist into the “next big thing”. However, this artist may be able to establish eirself in the minds of a larger range of listeners with this effort. Two tracks from this album have charted at the present time; “Everything” and “Me And Mrs Jones”, and Buble’s star is beginning to shine (culminating in eir performance replacing Tony Bennett on American Idol). The only thing that seems to spell trouble for me on “Call Me Irresponsible” is the fact that Buble does a number of covers on the album. I understand that it is a common thing for crooners to do at this date and time (include a number of covers on their album), but I think that more copies would sell if Buble was able to break free and wow fans more consistently with eir own material.

The fact that “Everything”, a track at least partially penned by Buble, was a huge hit for eir should be enough evidence to allow Buble’s next album to be more original-heavy. For those individuals that casually come into contact with Buble, there are a few standards that ey places on “Call Me Irresponsible” that individuals can measure eir with. This is reflected by the covers of Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight” and “The Best Is Yet To Come”, a track that individuals identify as first coming from Frank Sinatra.

These tracks will resonate in the hearts of older listeners, but for Buble to become even more of a cultural icon, perhaps there could be a song covered by eir that is a little newer. If Buble would go through a rendition of something soulful and heartbreaking (perhaps this could be where one of eir originals could fit in), the 600,000 copies that ey has sold in the United States could treble or quadruple. The singing style of Buble is remarkable, especially for someone that has been in the business for a relatively short period of time. One has to wonder how talented ey will be 10 or 20 years after the release of this aslbum, considering how solid and how well these tracks all fit together. If you are a fan of very strong vocals and thoughtful arrangements in the adult contemporary vein, check out “Call Me Irresponsible”. If you like newer pop music, see if Buble makes overtures to that domain here soon.

  1. I hate Michael Buble. Almost every song he did was covered! It’s sad that he doesn’t have the skills to make his own songs… (Just like you mentioned) By the way, “Everything” was covered, too! Hm, I don’t call him a “artist” anymore because he covers too much songs. He’s one of the worst artists I know, sorry for that, fans of him, but that’s my opinion.
    Regards,
    Miwaza.
