Pretty much anyone that is savvy in pop culture knew about the buzz that was surrounding Cloverfield when it first came out. However, the buzz actually was correct in portraying Cloverfield as this new, almost visionary, type of film. Where the shaky camcorder style is obviously reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project, the rapid shift in the moviue’s plot shows that J.J. Abrams still has what it takes to keep individuals on their feet and wondering where the film will ultimately take them. The DVD has enough in the way of features and interesting twists and turns that it really follows well in the spirit that the advertising of the film originally had.

This means that the DVD obviously has a documentary on it, but there are a number of featurettes that will provide individual with even more in the way of information about the creative process. Of particular note for these featurettes has to be “I Saw It! It’s Alive! It’s Huge”, which goes into designers’ minds about the ultimate design of Clover and the parasites that are present in the movie. The blooper reel that is present will create quite a few chuckles for individuals that are watching this DVD, where the deleted scenes mark the pinnacle of the added features.

This is due to the fact that the film is further fleshed out with these scenes, and while not exactly deleted scenes, the alternate endings provide viewers with a “what if” that completely changes the tone of the last few minutes of the film. For individuals that like messing around, there are a number of Easter Eggs that can be found as well. Where a number of first run DVDs suffer from a paucity of extras (so that the studios can re-release the DVD with added features and make a few extra bucks), Paramount has dumped a tremendous amount of material on the laps of anyone that buys this DVD. While there are not the amazing trailers present that got everyone talking about the film in the first place, DVDs have a limit. Expect that feature to be present on the Blu-Ray version of the disc, which should be out in June. While there has not been an officially confirmed sequel, one would have to hope, especially given the extra context provided by this DVD, that a sequel to Cloverfield would be in the works. I’m sure if the DVD sales are brisk enough, the chance of that sequel happening are even more likely. Pick it up.
