Copenhagen (via Sacramento) based artist CHLLNGR has had quite a 2011 with the debut of his critically-lauded LP “Haven” on Green Owl and keeping busy working with Spoek Mathambo, Teachers, and Cubic Zirconia. To cap off the year, CHLLNGR is proud to present the video for “Change”. Directed by Ryan Todd and Chad Turner, the video features both 2D and 3D animation recalling both 2001: A Space Odyssey and the work of Ralph Bakshi. “The loose story was a total nerd-out session,” co-director Ryan Todd told Wired.com. “We snuck in space battles, magic, terraforming, psychedelia, meditation, relationship drama and whatever else we had in our heads at the time.”You can read all about the process and influences over at Wired.com.
Inspired by dub pioneers like King Tubby, Scientist, and Lee Perry, the track is a previously unreleased work from CHLLNGR showing his strong dub roots. It is available through the Los Angeles based and Kompakt distributed label Time No Place, who will be releasing an EP of brand new CHLLNGR tunes this winter. The label will also see releases from Nguzunguzu, Zoos of Berlin, The Urxed, Castratii, Rainbow Arabia, and many more in 2012.
Praise for CHLLNGR’s Haven…
“It’s an album of gorgeous sounds and textures that prefer to lay in the dark and be discovered rather than assert themselves. Pay close attention, though, it’ll be an album whose formidably conceived world haunts you for much longer than its runtime” – Andrew Ryce, Resident Advisor
“the prize in Haven’s percussive contributions is not just in the rhythms that result; it’s also found in the natural ebb and flow in with which they are weaved in and around each song, becoming almost trance-inducing via the simultaneously fluid and exact manner they are presented” – Glenn Jackson, XLR8R
” it’s an extra fine album of striking, nuanced productions that both work as mood music and stand up to scrutiny.” – Brandon Bussolini, Dusted
